Bridesmaids - Same dress different colors vs different dress same colors

Emily, on December 12, 2017 at 9:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

I'm trying to decide on what look I want for my girls. I want to give them some freedom and touch of individuality. I only have three girls total, a Maid of Honor, Matron of Honor and one Maid. Pros and cons of having all girls in the same dress in varying sades vs the same color in different dress styles?

If you have the girls in the same color but different style dresses it allows them to pick a dress that flatters their figure.

You left off the third option- different dresses and different colors. If you tell them the colors, fabric and length, you still have some control.

If I had to choose from your options, I would choose same color, different dress. That way a busty girl can can choose something that allows her to wear a bra etc.

I will be having 3 as well. Maid of honor, bridesmaid and a jr bridesmaid. 3 different generations-40s, 19 and 9. They will have 3 totally different dresses to suite their styles and figures.

I am having a hard time deciding that as well. I will have 4 girls standing with me and I ultimately plan on getting the advice of my MOH and the other girls to make sure they feel comfortable with whichever option I am leaning towards before I decide.

I think different styles in the same color is the easier to make people happy with a dress they actually like and still look cohesive.

@muriel, interesting. how would you be able, then, to distinguish the bridal party from any other guest if there is not some sort of continuity between the dresses? and how would you know if they compliment or clash?

@Muriel, I had initially pitched the idea of different colors and styles, and they all liked the same style (I was just showing them very early ideas to get of feel of what direction they want to go in) which is why my thought was initially different colors. We haven't finalized anything yet and I want to keep giving them as many options as I can (they are all pretty busty and I'm really keeping that in mind when showing other dresses) in case they find something better. (and yes we have discussed budget)

We're all so intent on pleasing each other no one wants to openly say "I would like X" or "I dont like Y." I want to leave it flexible for them, while they want to go along with whatever I suggest (or so they say). So far the only requests are no strapless/spaghetti straps, and able to hide/disguise a bra, which fits all the dresses I have "Favorited" in my browsing thus far.

    @FutureMrs.V

I love those! My dress has a high neckline, so I couldn't do something like that without them looking to matchy with me.

ETA: My color scheme would be very similar to that if I did different colors, but dark/medium purple, light purple, mauve.

    I will be having 7

    2 MOH

    3 bridesmaid

    2 or bridesmaid

My MO will have the same dress as the bridesmaids but different colors. My Jr bridesmaid will have different dresses which be a lighter version of the MOH and bridesmaid dresses.

I have 4: I picked the color, they picked similar styles in fabrics. I wanted the same thing, to see their individuality. They all have a floor length, burgundy, a line with a cummerbund type wasteline (I thought it was funny that they all chose such a similar style). Each dress is made of a different fabric: lace, chiffon (the clear stuff, not sure I'm using the right word), satin, and cotton blend. It also just worked out that they each wanted the fabric the chose. I only influenced the color and floor length part.

I'm doing a poll in my bridesmaid facebook chat. So far the responses have been "I can't decide. They all seem like good options to me." I'll just get them all together with my swatches and "inspiration" styles and see how everyone feels all sitting in the same room.

I am doing the same color but different styles due to the fact that some don't feel comfortable with the same dress.

I did same color, different dresses. I gave them 6 options to choose from and they each chose a different one. It looked great!

Definitely one color different styles. i have 3, the MOH, a bridesmaid and a JBM. the JBM is 11 and isnt going to look the same, nor have the same options, as the MOH who is very skinny but busty, and the bridesmaid is a mom of 2, so her body is definitely not like either of the other two. definitely give them the option to pick something they can be comfortable in and choose the color.

I have three ladies as well. each picked her own dress in her own color. I went with Azazie and limited the color selection to purple colors that would match my wedding colors. So we ended up with styles and colors that compliment each ladies' body and hair/skin coloring. Just like some styles look better or certain body types, some colors will wash one person out and not another. I really like the colors they selected!

ETA: My computer screen makes the last two look more blue than purple, but they really compliment each other in person and blend well.

Mine are same color, different dresses. I wasn't opposed to different colors either though. I think it can be done right.

Same color, designer, length and fabric. They picked the style. They had more flexibility in budget by picking their own style and got something that flattered them. All my girls said they loved their dresses.

One was in a wedding the week before mine in the same color dress. I had no idea she bought two burgundy dresses for two different weddings. I told her I wish she would have told me. I wouldn't have minded her wearing the dress for the previous wedding. She said the bride picked that dress and she hated it, so she was really excited to wear the one she picked out.

I'm MOH in my sis' wedding and it's nice to have a choice. I'm busty and certain styles make me look bustier or are too revealing.
