Bridesmaids Quandry - Not enough girl friends. Pathetic, I know.

betty, on June 15, 2013 at 8:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

So my fiance is going to have 4 groomsmen.

I only have 2 close girl friends that I want in my party. I could include my much-older sister as matron of honor, although we are not that close and she has never even met the other girls.

The problem is that a lot of my friends are guys. I just don't have that many close girl friends. Two of my very close girl friends live very far away and I don't want to pressure them into having to make the trip by asking them to be in the bridal party.

Is it weird to have an uneven number of groomsmen/bridesmaids? We are not doing a formal church wedding and they will not be walking down any aisle.

Uneven is perfectly fine. If there are two girls you're close with, than have two. Or have brides-men that stand on your side Smiley smile

I think it would be fine being uneven. Even if they were to walk down an aisle, I would just put 2 groomsmen to 1 bridesmaid. One on each arm.

    Date twin!

The beauty about it is- you can do whatever you want. I honestly would only have 1-2 BMs at MOST if FH didn't have 2 sisters... I don't have a lot of girlfriends either- at least not really close ones. Friendships seem to shift and change a lot in these stages of life.

Don't feel sad about it! I personally think guys are easier to deal with anyways, I don't have many girlfriends because they're so uptight/judgy about everything. You upset them once and that's it.

Since they're not walking down the aisle and you're not having a traditional wedding, there should be no problem with two bridesmaids and 4 groomsmen...

And also I have read on line that women have placed men as bridesmen...you could do that if you're really concerned and desperate...I would advise talking to your fiancé first though (mine wouldn't stand for it...but maybe yours will?)

Then just have two. Could FH have one of his guys be an usher? You could have FH walk with his parents, then maybe the best man walk with the grandparents (or your parents, or whoever), then have a bridesmaid walk with a groomsmen then the other bridesmaid walk with the last groomsmen?

I only have 6 girls where as FH has 7 guys.

You could have each of your bridesmaids escorted by two guys. I've seen that once before.

Thank you so much ladies! That makes me feel so much better.

I am torn on whether to ask my older sister to be matron of honor. I was a bridesmaid in her wedding (when I was 17.)

I wonder if she expects to be in the party, or would be offended if not asked.

I am really stressing over all this etiquette stuff. I know I shouldn't be, and people say 'do whatever you want', but, I'm stressing nonetheless.

If you would like your out-of-state friends to be included, it doesn't hurt to ask. Let them know there's no pressure to do so and you understand that they may not be able to participate in all of the planning/activities. One of my BMs is out-of-state and even though I was worried about the costs, she was thrilled that I asked and we are finding ways to make it work. You never know, they may be really excited to be a part of your day! Otherwise, do whatever feels right for you!

I am actually in the same boat, so I decided to have my "maid of honor" be a "man of honor" instead and asked my best guy friend. It works out much better for me, and I know he'll be the one person to not stress me out on our wedding day!

You have to do what feels right for you,and not worry about what other people are going to think.

I'm with Ashley. One of my friends travelled a very long way to be my BM. Also I've seen men in the Bride's bridal party, and uneven numbers and both are great.

The MAIN thing is, who do you want to be spending the day with? As these are the people you will see most on your wedding day.

Oh gosh, you can go either way.

The right answer about wedding parties is that the people you feel close enough to be beside you are there. So if that means you have men to your side, that's appropriate...if that means two people, that's appropriate too. One guy on each girl's arm.

I have 3 bridesmaids and FI has 2 groomsmen. He doesn't want to just ask someone to be a filler because he wants his party to be meaningful.

I would have asked the other closest friend I have to be in my party (male) but he's 3,000 miles away and I'm not sure he's going to be able to make it yet.

    Uneven is fine.

    Mixed gender attendants are fine

    No attendants are fine.

Do what works for you! It's not a pagent, it's your wedding!!

I agree with choosing whoever you want to stand by your side whether it be male or female. I only have 3 BMs who will be standing with me. My FH could have a dozen of his friends beside him easily. LOL! He says he will match my number but if he ends up having more on his side than mine it's ok.

Make yourself comfortable and do what makes you happy.

We have 4 men on his side and 3 on mine. My Matron of Honor is the only one close to me. My Bridesmaids live 8 hours and two states away but jump on it when ever I ask them to help me with stuff and have promised to be here for my day. I wouldn't trade my wedding party for the world, uneven or not.

I know the feeling. I don't have very many friends myself. I don't think its weird. I mean, it all depends on what you envision for your wedding. Personally, I offered my fh a switch, he gets some females and I get some males since most of my family is male. So that's how it worked for us. I have just 3 BM (FH's sister, my niece, my nephew's gf) and my matron of honor (my other niece). Since I have his sis, he put one of my nephews as one of his GMs. and now we're even.

Hope it works out for you!!!

I think uneven is perfectly fine! I have 3 gals standing up with me and FH has 5. Don't insert "extras" onto your side just to equalize!

An uneven wedding party is just fine. That being said, I have several guy friends, and two of my attendants are guys (bridesmen).
