Bridesmaids Hair & Makeup: Who Pays?

Private User, on January 20, 2016 at 12:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Who pays for the bridesmaids hair & makeup? Originally, I was planning on paying for it. Now, I have thought about paying for either their hair or makeup but not both. Is that out of order? Should I scale down somewhere else to make sure I can pay for both their hair and makeup? Here's the details so I can get your thoughts:

1. I have a 1920s themed wedding so their hair is important

2. I have 8 bridesmaids (I was planning on paying for my mom and my fiance's mom's makeup as well)

3. Not sure these details matters, but I let them choose whatever dress they wanted as long as it is floor length, black, and chiffon-like material. They could purchase it from anywhere at any price. I am providing all of my bridesmaids these lovely art deco headpieces/accessories and earrings as well.

4. The hair is going to run me about $320 and the makeup is about $50 per person so ($500 including the moms). Total Cost=$820

Thoughts? What would you do?

Usually they do I think but you can offer to. One of my BM is doing everyone's makeup. I may off to pay for their hair, haven't decided yet.

If you want their hair and makeup a very specific way usually its the bride that pays, no matter what else you are giving them. If it were me and I wanted something specific I would be paying for it. I had 8 BMs too so I know how it gets really expensive.

I paid for my girls makeup if they wanted to get it done. And a few chose not to so I paid for part of the hair, whatever was equal to makeup. I gave everyone the option on doing the hair and makeup themselves or getting it done. They all chose one or the other but I didn't require it.

I've heard people pay for it completely, while some don't. I'm having the same dilemma myself. I don't think I can afford to pay for everyone, so I will likely let the bridesmaids decide if they want hair and makeup done. Like if they wanna do it, they can pay. If not, then they can do it themselves. It's a tough call bc I do makeup well and I wish I could do my BM's makeup Smiley sad I don't feel like its worth paying someone 50-60 for work I can do myself. I'll be following cuz I'd like to know what others say too!

Generally, if you are requiring hair and/or makeup you pay, if not you make it optional and they can choose if they want to do it (and then pay themselves if they do). Since you say that hair is very important to you, I would suggest paying for that.

I made both optional for my girls, but they all chose to do both. I surprised them by paying for everyone's makeup a few days before the wedding. Needless to say they were all very happy.

I also made hair and makeup optional for my girls because I couldn't afford to pay for it for them. They all got hair and most got makeup.

Assuming you can afford it, I would pay for the hair as that's important for this theme (especially given the addition of the headpiece). The makeup is your call. I wouldn't let the fact you're paying for the Moms' makeup dictate if you pay for the bridesmaids. Unless you want them to have a specific look in terms of makeup.

I'm paying for my bridesmaid's hair/makeup/nails as it will be more money then their desses and they all have limited budgets I don't want them to stress. They're getting their dresses

If you're requiring something specific, generally you pay.

If you're requiring a certain hairstyle or make up then you pay for it.

Every wedding i've been in the BMs paid for their own hair and makeup. I have 6 BMs and i will give them the option to get their hair and makeup done or not. I'm pretty sure all will get both done.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to pay for their hair, and then have them pay for their makeup if they choose to get it done. All I really want for the makeup is for them to have a red lip (goes with the theme).

My BM's paid for their own. I didn't require any specific look but I sent around pictures of the look I was going for. I gave them the option to get it done by the hairstylist and make-up artists who came to the hotel but it wasn't mandatory. Also, while I was looking for stylist I made sure they were reasonably priced so they would be more likely to stick with my option. The make-up artist that i loved was pretty expensive so I paid for half and they paid the other half but I never told them I paid for it.

I think that's a good plan. 1920's makeup is really, really easy to do yourself. Honestly it can be as simple as a red lip and a touch of mascara.

What I did was pretty unconventional, but mine is an Indian wedding so it's a little different. I bought the bridesmaids' outfits because I can get them in India for much cheaper than here. But for hair and makeup, since I don't require anything in particular I will have them pay if they want to get it done professionally.

I didn't require my girls to have certain hair and make up but I paid for them anyways because I thought it was a nice gesture and gift to them for being in the wedding. If you're requiring something specific, then I would say yes you should pay.

You could pay for a portion of their hair. Paying for everyone's hair is expensive, pay a portion and I'm sure they would still be grateful

I can't pay for my girls, but I told them it's completely optional. That being said my cousin is insisting I choose what her hair looks like, but she's paying. I also get to pick her hair color and length for this lol, she is constantly changing her hair color and putting in extensions and taking them out, but she's decided she's waited so long for this that I get top use her as my personal barbie for this one day.

I think I am going to pay the tip for both hair and makeup for everyone depending how many girls decide to do it.

I'm paying for their hair since I want them to have it professionally done. I don't care what they have done as long as its professional.

If you require a styled updo or specific style (which you are) then you need to pay for it. The girls can do their own makeup but almost no one can style their own hair like a pro can! You can also give your girls the option of using your pro makeup artist, if they want. They may surprise you by going ahead and splurging on pro makeup.
