Bridesmaids dresses from ETSY---has anyone else taken this route?

treegirl, on January 25, 2014 at 4:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

The colors for my wedding are earthtones(brown, tan, greens) and for the bridesmaids, I would like them to be wearing different earthtone shades of green. Not emerald, and meadow, but more like sage and a bit darker....so no bridal stores in my area carry any of the colors that I'd like. But I did find what I want on Etsy.....the only thing is that the woman lives in China. She custom makes the dresses for about $100 and she has great reviews. What should I do?

China dresses are a risk. You could luck out and get a great deal, or you could get screwed. Saying around here is "For every happy china dress story, there is 20 horror stories."

And yes - just because its Etsy doesn't stop them from selling the same crap they push on the websites you find running around selling knock-off dresses. If anything its more prevalent on Etsy because its "supposed" to be hand made or vintage goods, not factory churned out stuff.

See how long the shop has been in business by going to the shop page. If it is new, I wouldn't risk it. If it has been around for a while and has great reviews, go for it! I think using PayPal also helps give you some protection. I have only had great experiences with Etsy, but I have never ordered from China before...

Yeah, I definitely have mixed feelings about it. I ordered 6 different color swatches from her, and got them in about 10 days, and everything was correct that I had ordered. I only had to pay $5 for shipping. Each time I spoke with her, she responded rather quickly. I feel good about it, but I know there's a huge risk when I'm sending her $500!!!!!!

Danielle, There is no way you are buying dresses from China and paying a mere 5.00 for shipping. Also remember this is the internet and people can write any reviews they want. Heck I can set up 40 plus accounts here and write reviews that aren't true, websites do not have the programming usually to run from one isp unless they know they have trouble with it. ETSY is a mere market place I would be sure they are backing you when it comes to money spent if you are ripped off. I would watch paypal things also as they are difficult in getting your money back to you in less than 45 days. I personally think at best I would order 1 dress first. Shipping a 20 lbs package from china to the us through the postal service is 155 plus shipping.

I swear what you described makes me think of this other designer I've seen on Etsy that's not in China. Let me see if I can find it.

This shop custom makes dresses. These dresses are what I thought of when I read what you want. Maybe she has your colors. Good luck! http://www.etsy.com/listing/104795933/custom-bridesmaids-dresses?ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ref=sr_gallery_1

I'm glad I can help! I ran across these on Etsy and totally fell in love but they don't at all go with my wedding. I hope it works out for you! If so I want to see pics!

Etsy is great, but personally I wouldn't buy from China. I LOOOOVE the dresses I picked out for my girls on etsy! The store is based out of California. Everyone's already ordered and received them. They are very nice quality and so cute! (photo is of back of dress)

ETA: My BM dresses were only $68 each, so it IS possible to find inexpensive dresses that aren't from China!

On Etsy there is a shop from Canada called hollyxholly that another bride on here told me about. The lady seems very nice and responds promptly and I feel better knowing someone has already ordered from her! $79 dolls per dress and she send color swatches for just $3!

I haven't but I've seen many that I liked. I do plan on investing in one or two as they can be used for other occasions.
