Bridesmaids dress that i like, or that the bm like?

Melissa, on February 19, 2021 at 1:34 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Hi ladies! So I have 7 BM, and they have different skin tones and will all be at different walks of life come wedding time - some will be pregnant, and some will just have had babies. They are all super chill, amazing women and so I'm sure that they would wear whatever I chose without making a fuss, but of course I want them to feel beautiful and comfortable on the day.

My ideal BM dress would be a satin champagne dress but considering most BM are fair skinned and some might not be feeling ready to dress in a thin fabric having just given birth or pregnant, this idea is probably out.

I'm totally fine with a service like Birdy Grey where the girls can pick dresses that make them feel the most comfortable, but then I'm still trying to decide the color. Champagne or a very light blush really are my favorite choices, but am not sure if the fair skinned gals will like it.

I've thought about mix and matching colors, but kind of don't want to deal with deciding who gets what in case some don't like their colors but like another's color.

So I suppose my question is how much should I consider each individual girl and how much should I not worry about it.

Thank you so much for your help!!! Smiley smile

Side note: I totally realize that 7 BM is a lot. But I love them all so much and honestly couldn't imagine any of them not being up there during this special moment!

They will be wearing them so they need to be comfortable and flattering, therefore their choice. Azazie and Cocomelody also have inexpensive try on at home dresses that have the same color palette.

I only have 2, and both of them have slightly different skin tone but similar body type. I shop around online and send them pictures of bridesmaids dresses I like. They will choose which one and I will buy them those, along with their shoes and jewelry.

I just want to say that 7 isn't that many lol. Where I'm from, it's not uncommon to have 10-12 bms lol!! So don't worry!

What I did was include all my ladies in a group text and show them photos of colors I was wanting! I ended up falling in love with the dove grey color from Birdy Grey! I sent them the color to look at, and they all agreed that they liked it! I have 1 MOH and 3 BM. One is Filipino like me and has a darker skin tone with black hair. One is fair skinned with blonde hair. Another is a fair skinned natural red head, and the other has a light skin tone with light brownish hair.

It's nice to take their thoughts into consideration! A champagne satin dress is gorgeous, but if your girls aren't comfortable, then it will def. show. I do highly suggest using Birdy Grey for their dresses though. They have the Bridal Salon feature that all of them can join and it shows what dresses each person likes (including you), and what dress they bought! You as the bride can also edit it to tell the ladies what color(s) to buy from, fabric etc.

Your day, your choice. If you want them all in that satin fabric, then go for it. Especially if you know their personalities and will be fine with it.

Having just had a baby there is no possible way I would be wearing a slinky champagne satin dress while pregnant or postpartum. Like, no chance. It has nothing to do with how much I love you as the bride. I would highly recommend picking a color you like from birdy grey or azazie or whatever and letting them pick something that they feel good in.

My SIL had a similar situation with her BMs. We all had vastly different skin tones, and what looked good on one would look horrible on another. She picked out three colors that went well together, and sent us all those three colors and told us to rank them in order of our favorite to least favorite, and also to indicate if we absolutely hated/would feel awful in any of the colors. It really helped a lot! Everyone got either their first or second choice of color, and no one was put in a color they hated.

I wanted my girls comfy, but I wanted MY color— these will be YOUR pictures forever so make sure you’re happy with color choices! I gave them the color and they chose the dresses. Even though they’ll prob never wear them again bc they prob wouldn’t have picked that color out for themselves, they still each got to wear dresses that they felt good and happy in.

As a bridesmaid I would want to wear what makes my bride friend the happiest!!

Keep in mind too that even if you love a color like champagne, you may not like your pictures at all if all your BM's look washed out and pale in it. Not saying you shouldn't pick it if you love it, but its another consideration Smiley smile

I love champagne colored dresses and originally was considering that direction, however I highly recommend going to a David’s bridal to try on that color before deciding (even if you’re ordering from an online retailer). When I actually saw several shade variations on it changed my mind; it accentuated problem areas and made lighter skin look really washed out. I’ll have pregnant/postpartum bridesmaids too and my goal was to pick something that makes them their most confident (we agreed on a dark grey), but that’s a personal preference bc we are older and I’ve worn terrible bridesmaids dresses before.

I think you choosing the color you love and allowing them to choose their own dress in your chosen color is a great compromise

I picked the color and they picked their own dress styles. Always thought it was kinda strange when the bride picked a specific dress that everyone has to wear. The color scheme goes along with whatever your wedding vision but the style of the dress doesnt matter as much in pictures

As a pale skinned girl myself if I had to wear a color I know will wash me out I will just get a spray tan anyways! But I feel like you should pick the color that you want for your wedding and people will just deal. I’m personally picking a color that won’t wash people out so maybe you could pick a darker shade if you’re concerned a lot about it! But in the end you pick what color you want!

Thanks Shelly!! (Good to know the # of BM isn't too many haha)

I didn't realize that you can communicate/track each other on Birdy Grey, I think that could be really helpful!

Thanks for your insight!! You're right, I have never re-worn a past bridesmaid dress and probably would never have bought any of them if it weren't for the wedding, but don't regret any of them because it was a friend's special day and I was happy to be a part of it.

Yes this is so true. As much as I love a champagne dress, you're right that the specific shade really makes or breaks it. Might be more hassle than it's worth haha. Smiley heart

This is very true. Other than length and *maybe* fabric, if the colors are the same then other details really aren't that obvious. Thanks Ally!
