Bridesmaid selection

Grace, on June 5, 2025 at 12:27 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 1
I’m having a big dilemma on who to ask as my bridesmaids/moh.
My two oldest friends were my immediate choice, however on reflection our relationship has changed some what in the past few years. Accepting we are all grown ups some with children and all living busy lives. I was also moh for one of the ladies and moved mountains to ensure she had the best time, organised 2 hen dos and had to take 5 days annual leave which was just expected of me.
However, I have formed really solid friendships with 3 lovely ladies who have been in my life over the past 10 years and they have shown more excitement and involvement with hen planning, dress shopping and generally so excited for my big day. When trying to organise to see my oldest friends there is always a blocker of some sort and this has resulted in 6 months of not seeing each other (they haven’t even seen my ring). Doubled with the fact they have both said they won’t be able to attend my hen do this summer as one is on maternity leave and the other is on a holiday for 2 months (she couldn’t easily spare a weekend for me as it will be in Europe). I’m torn between upsetting my oldest friends when really I feel I should be choosing the women who have really shown way more interest in my life in the past few years. Or am I being unreasonable to expect my friends to be there as I was for them in the lead up to their special day?
Help please!

The first thing to realize is that your dedication concerning your friend's wedding is very nice of you but should not be an automatic expectation by anyone. Not everyone who is a bridesmaid is able or interested to serve so much and may not have the inclination to do so as you did.

Try then to avoid making it an obligation to organize events unless someone is really volunteering to lead these efforts. Especially, when younger in age, friends may have less structured lives that allow more participation in each other's weddings. Maybe with two friends who are eager to help and work together seamlessly, you have a good chance they will help you.

Hopefully the attitudes of your various friends may show to whom the wedding will be a more focused event and that others maybe could be happy just to be guests.
