Bridesmaid Proposal vs Bridesmaid Dress/hair/makeup

Katie, on February 17, 2020 at 3:31 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

I've confirmed my bridesmaids already, so sending a gift box would be less of a proposal and more of a gesture. I'm planning on getting my girls either robes or shirts for the day of our wedding but should I still send them a "bridesmaid proposal box"? I'm trying to keep things in budget but don't want them to feel slighted since this is apparently the new trend. (Not that they necessarily would, but it's the thought of it)

Everyone loves gifts, but if it came to it, would you have preferred that your bride paid for your dress or your hair or makeup?

Trendar Trends because of people who like the trends. Just because something is a trend doesn't mean that you are obligated to do it and that if you don't someone's going to feel slighted. I did a proposal box because Dad is just my personality but anytime I have been a bridesmaid I just felt special being asked and never got offended because I wasn't given a proposal. I will say I definitely appreciated it when the bride's gave me a nice gift after all the money that was spent in order for me to be prepared for their wedding. If your style is not to do a proposal box or you don't have the money for it then definitely don't do it. I think you are getting them something for the day of which is just as nice. If you still want to do something but on a lower budget why don't you take the ladies to Starbucks and have the Barista right the proposal question on the cup and you can treat them to a two or three dollar copy.

I honestly would had order the hair nails and makeup more then the proposal box. Either way you can still give them a small thankyou gift if you wanted to just for being in your wedding.

You're not really gifting them anything if the only money you're spending is toward how they're going to look for your own wedding. Proposal boxes really aren't necessary, but they can be nice gestures (especially if, like in your case, they've already confirmed and don't feel obligated to say yes just because you spent money on them).

Actual bridesmaids gifts are usually given the day before or the day of the wedding, and for these gifts, you should shop for each person like it's their birthday, taking their individual tastes into consideration. Getting them props (getting-ready robes for pictures, hair and makeup for the wedding, etc.), while definitely nice, doesn't count as getting them a gift.

I actually regret doing my bridesmaids boxes in retrospect since it felt like a waste of money (everything just said Bridesmaid on it and honestly after seeing it all no one wants that stuff lol). I also offered to pay for HMUA. So my vote is you do that instead of a proposal box. You could just do a nice card thanking them for agreeing to help you on your big day to tide them over until it’s actually your wedding day. But I’d still get them a gift (but it doesn’t have to be expensive—I bought everyone engraved necklaces off Etsy about $15/each).

I love proposal boxes. BUT I'd way rather have the bride contribute towards dress or HAMU if I had to choose.
