Bridesmaid Gifts

Molly, on April 14, 2020 at 11:58 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Hi! I need advice on gifts for my bridesmaids! Please no cups, robes, or anything that says "bridesmaid" on it! I want to make sure that they can use it in the future and won't be a waste of my money!

Thanks!!!

    What’s your budget?

I gave each of my bridesmaids a piece of jewelry I thought they would like. I got great diamond stacking rings and necklaces from Ring Concierge. Bon Levy has great pieces too.

Shop for them like it's their birthday. They don't all need to receive the same items, as long as you're spending relatively the same amount of money on them. Individualized gifts are so much more thoughtful and really show that you went out of your way to think about each girl individually. Those, along with a heartfelt note, will really go far.

I got mine some gift cards, a compact mirror, some face masks and lotion. i did also get them a few things that said bridesmaid on it but i think having at least one is kind of cute because it's like a token of their role.

Shop for them individually like it is their birthday or Christmas.

I got everyone ‘bridesmaid type’ gifts and things they could use for the wedding (also selfishly on my end bc some things I wanted for pictures lol!) but I also made sure it wasn’t too cheesy and could definitely be used again!

So I got everyone cute pajama sets from LOFT - so they’re a good brand, good quality and they don’t say bridesmaid! And I got blanket scarf wraps from Anthropologie - they’re not really a formal pashmina. They’re def more of a blanket scarf and they’re cream so the girls can use them as a wrap for the wedding but they work as a blanket scarf for winter as well! I got face masks from anthropologie as well and I painted wooden hangers with their names and a dates as a keepsake! Also paying for their hair services.

I feel you. I have a small wedding party, so I considered getting everyone something personal to each individual, or similar or equal value. I also considered getting everyone fandango movie tickets for them and a date or something. So far I collected a bunch of little self love items (bath bombs, soaps, essential oils, etc) and made little boxes up for each bridesmaid.

I'm totally with you on not doing anything with the word bridesmaid on it. I don't know if you are crafty but I am planning on making shawls for them. I sewed simple makeup bags for them to ask them to be my bridesmaids and they really enjoyed them.

Exactly this. I have never kept a single little gift, or wedding related ( BM, or couple's name, or my monogram on something I hate.) Instant trash. Chosen to the bride's taste. Some expensive. Boxed wine bottles, 6 or a dozen in a commemorative box. From brides who never offer wine to either of us when we visit, because I don't drink it, and hubby is allergic to many varieties of wine grapes. But everyone in the wedding party got it, including a 16 yr old once. 10 assorted size candles in glass holders, each with the name of a BM or GM or the couple, so each of us could remember the whole wedding party. When the bride and I were friends and I never knew ( or particularly liked ) any of them. We were not a team, we were a bunch of strangers from different times in their lives. And at the time, we had 5 kids ( 2 toddlers) and 3 over 120 pound dogs. Fire safety/ candles spread all around? Dogs tall enough to steal from the top of the refrigerator, knocking over candles? No thought whatsoever. Such gifts make you think the bride does not see anyone as people, just reflections of her, and hat she likes. And some very expensive misses. One well off bride commissioned a famous jeweler to make necklaces and bracelets. Clunky jewelry was the IN thing, and her colors were lime and lemon and white. No one would wear it for the wedding, and we all ditched it later. Turns out the sets cost over $500 each. Junk if they go with nothing the BM ever will wear. And so many brides ( and grooms) do give great gifts. Right to the person's tastes and interests. For me, child safe, pet safe. In the last 3 years, a shawl collar evening sweater, a new AMC Field guide and trail maps for the White Mountains, 10 small bottles of liqueurs + 5 pounds nuts+ 1 quart honey ( I like to cook) , and a replacement paddle, because they had heard (not from me) that I had lost one, and literally been up the creek without a paddle. If you are a close enough friend to have someone in your WP, treat them like individuals, not a group. Forget robes and things that have to do with the wedding, they have pictures as mementos. Shop like it is their birthday. My husband was thrilled as a BMan to get a green felt topper to fit his card table. The week before, I had taken 6 flasks to the dump from several weddings ( Goodwill won't take them with names and dates inscribed.) Better 4 decks of nice cards or a paperback book, under $20 and liked and used, than 10 things costing $200 total, never used.

For my proposals, I got a personalized box (can be used for storage if they want), a canvas tote bag, a koozie, hair ties, a candle, and a mini bottle of alcohol. For the wedding day, they'll have their getting ready pjs, a personalized stainless wine cooler, a personalized hanger, and maybe like a bath bomb or some sort of jewelry.

Pick something that fits each woman's personal interests. They don't have to be identical or names engraved etc.

For the proposal, I got products they love or that I love but would love it. Face creams, wet hairbrushes, comfy clothes, hanky panky undies. For the actual day, I think I might do PJs instead of a robe (I'm swimming in bridesmaid robes from weddings I've been in) and a piece of jewelry (the only bridesmaid gifts I've used are earrings I've gotten). I'm from the west coast so monogram/personalized stuff isn't big here. I know that it is in the south though, and people like it because they'd never buy it for themselves. Personally, I'd love a really nice plush terry robe with my name on it.
