Bridesmaid gifts and Survival kit?

SoontobeMRS.H, on March 16, 2014 at 11:44 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 17

Hi ladies,

I am working on my bridesmaids survival kit and i'm noticing they can get quite expensive. So my question to everyone is, will you be doing one or the other or are you doing both? I wanted to do both but I cannot think of a good bridesmaid gift that wont set me over my gift budget. What are y'all doing?

What is a survival kit? I don't think I've heard of that! I've been a bridesmaid/maid of honor several times and have received gifts, but not a survival kit haha! Do enlighten me!

I'm way over budget because I have bought them all robes, monogrammed tote bags, lush stuff and I'm starting them tiffany charm bracelets. Sephora sells a cute bridesmaid survival kit but it's like $19 which is too much of an add on.

I'm also paying for their hair/make up (but don't consider that a gift)

I'll be doing mini survival kits and a small gift, like a monogrammed shirt or robe, but I am also covering their hotel room cost

You should be giving them a gift in appreciation of everything they have done for your wedding. A "survival kit" - things they may need on the day of the wedding - doesn't count as a gift since it's for your wedding. I would spent your budget on thoughtful, personal, gifts for them and skip the survival kit.

Okay I see what this is. One of my friends who got married gave us the most useful thoughtful gifts! She bought us all personally embroidered canvas tote bags from LL Bean--I use mine for work every day! She also gave us personally embroidered jewelry travel bags, which I use every time I travel--it's fantastic and keeps everything organized! She also bought us earrings to wear for her wedding, which I still wear whenever I wear something blue (our dresses were navy), and a bottle of wine! It was the best gift haha!

I am giving my girls personalized hangers & personalized tumblers as well as survival kits. I plan on getting as much of the stuff for the survival kits from the dollar store as I can to help keep costs down.

I would do a survival kit AND a NWR gift or just a NWR gift.

I think survival kits are a waste. I can see having a basket where ever your girls are getting ready with a few necessities, but a kit for each one is much. I've NEVER needed anything from the kits I've been given and I've actually misplaced them more than used them (just more crap for me to remember). Just do a nice meaningful gift. I'm not one for monogrammed or overly bridal gifts. I am purchasing items for my bridal party that are thoughtful and will be used more than once that interests them.

I am doing both. I am not going all out on the survival kits though. Just putting a few things in them like aspirin, tissues, compact mirrors, little hair sprays, clear nail polish. Things that no one remembers but can be useful.

I am not a fan of this, I actually don't see a point but I know a lot of girls on here are doing survival kits. For me no kits I will be buying them things wedding related/not wedding related.

I'm doing survival kits along with a few different gifts. i'm gonna get robes that they can wear the day of to get ready that can still be used after the wedding, a tote bag with their Initial on it, a matching make-up travel bag with their initial on it ( which i will put the survival kit stuff into), a gift card to their fave restaurant, flip flops the same color as their shoes to wear at the reception, and a bottle of their favorite wine/liquor. i wanna get them things they'll actually use, and everyone can use a tote bag for the beach or for travel or whatever, same with a cosmetic bag and who doesnt love a light weight comfy robe! Smiley smile

I'm over budget on this, but I am doing both. I like the survival kit idea because even if they dont use it the day of, they can still toss it in a travel bag. Its the first aid kit that goes beyond the blood. Plus I've gotten their robes, a pair of earring for them to wear outside of the wedding, perfume atomizers and I'm getting ballet slippers for them to wear at the reception when they take off their shoes. It will all come in a personalized reusable sopping bag. I'm supplying their day of jewelry as well, but as everyone has said, if its required for the wedding, its almost not a gift at all.

Thanks for all of the responses. I want to do the survival kit but I want to make it a little more fun so I will have a few travel size items (deodorant, listerine strips, stain remover wipes, manicure set, tissues and lip gloss) but I also want to include a personal thank you note, a small bottle of wine, vodka and tequila.

I have gone back and forth about the gift because I don't want to waste money on something they can't/won't use again. My taste is very simple and they are all fashionistas so I don't want to purchase any jewelry for them. I thought about the satin robes maybe personalized with their name. I'm struggling with this and honestly besides my MOH I almost wish I could fire them because they are no help and so hard to involve in the wedding. Suggestions please!

Personalized tote bag with their name on it, and everything else will be in the tote.

    Personalized hanger

    Personalized robe

    Jewelry for day of

    Hair/Make up/Nails I'm paying for

A flask...uber cute ones on etsy for very reasonable prices. they have bride and bridesmaid dresses on them and for the groom and groomsmen they have those as well as tuxes

A small bottle of their favorite alcohol

    Flip flops for the reception

I was going to do a mini emergency kit for each, but I'm really liking your guy's option on one big one in the getting ready room for everyone to use.

I'm combining them. I created a survival kit as the gift but added some fun things too. Got everything from Michaels clearance and 5 Below to keep each gift below $30 each.
