Bridesmaid gift saga continues

Elizabeth, on March 28, 2021 at 12:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

I am struggling with what to get my bridesmaids. I took advice from the forum to get each one something personal that they would love. But then someone suggested that I shouldn't get something that won't last. I was going to get one of the girls a pair of shoes from a brand I know she likes, but shoes last 3 years, not 30. Things that last would be jewelry, fine kitchen items, things like that? I'm at a loss now.

Get them the jewelry they’ll wear with their dresses for the wedding

I need to start thinking about this too! I don't want to count anything that's for the wedding, so in my mind day of jewelry (if I do that) would just be part of the gift. I also want to gift them framed prints, but those would naturally have to be post-wedding!

I like the shoe idea, actually. I'm a runner & go through sneakers like crazy, & one of my bridesmaids is also a runner so I was debating getting her usual sneakers or a giftcard to our favorite running store. I agree with the "lasting" piece to some extent, but something like shoes from a favorite brand seems thoughtful & useful, versus a "throwaway."

One of my friends is a big reader & gave his groomsmen books selected to suit each of their reading preferences, which I thought was very cute.

Wait what? If you know she likes it, who cares if it won't last 30 years. There's no guarantee that any of those things listed won't break as well. Get herthe shoes!

I think you’re way over thinking this! I think it’s nearly impossible to give a gift that’s guaranteed to last 30 years!

Shoes sound like a great, totally personal gift!

Get something related to their personal interests. What are their hobbies and interests? Stay away from jewelry, robes, shoes and anything else that is wedding related props. Those are not gifts. No gift has to last 30 years. People take things way to literally.

I think you’re overthinking it! If you know she will love the shoes, get her the shoes! I think as long as the gift is not a prop for your pictures, and isn’t labeled with your names, wedding date, “bridesmaid”, etc. you’re fine Smiley smile

I don't think it matters that it will last 30 years or 3...get her whatever you think she'll like! I do have to say, I think the insistence of getting super personalize gifts unrelated to the wedding can cause a lot of stress! Especially when they all have to be equally nice, of relatively equal value, etc, but each distinct and unique... Don't drive yourself crazy over it either....I'm getting mine earrings and that's that.

I agree. I don’t think they need to be as personalized as birthday or holiday gifts. Just something that shows you appreciate them and know them and what they like. The last wedding I was in, the bride got each of us necklaces, but each were a little different based on our own personal likes/styles.

I think your original idea is the best. Get her the shoes! Don’t let others deter you from your vision!

Things like charms for bracelets kept for years, and necklaces, used to be common. But now they are not. Get things they will use now. If they are bird watchers, small glasses mY last a lifetime, while boots only a few years. Better than t shirts, candles, totes people literally throw out.
And surely a good blister or two will be named after you.🙂

I wouldn’t get caught up on how long it will last — heck, I got one bridesmaid really nice coffee beans, which I hope she’s already gone through! As long as it’s something she’ll enjoy, its longevity doesn’t matter.

I got my bridesmaids robes and custom champagne glasses with their names on them. I figured they would be great to use on the day of the wedding while we're getting ready, but they are also items that can be used well after the wedding is over. Don't stress too much, you've already got enough to worry about and bridesmaids in my experience have no real gift expectations!

Thank you everyone! I feel like I've been overloaded with advice about the bridesmaids gifts and have trouble trusting myself now. I'm going to go with my gut and just get things I know they will love and use
