Bridesmaid gift alternatives

Amanda, on September 30, 2020 at 1:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Hi! I am wondering if anyone got their bridesmaids anything cute besides robes for the wedding day? I have been in a lot of weddings recently, and I love the robes, but I would like to see if there are any cute alternatives to the robes? My wedding is in early April in Illinois, so it will still be pretty cold. I am still thinking I want to get them something to wear, but I am open to any ideas. Any suggestions or things that you've seen/done?

Thanks!!

Here are some alternatives to robes! https://www.theknot.com/content/bridesmaid-robe-alternatives

Also, you could shop for them as if it's their birthday/Christmas - get each one a gift that you think they would like. I suggest avoiding anything that has your name/wedding date on it, and also avoid things that say "Bridesmaid" so they can use them again after the wedding.

Robes and jewelry that are required for pictures or a certain look are not gifts. Get them something that fits their individual interests like you're birthday shopping. They don't have to match or have names/date printed on them.

It's great that you want to get them something to wear for your photos, but I surely wouldn't consider that a gift to them. Maybe you could do matching pajama sets?

Interesting, I was given a robe for all three weddings I was in this year as the only "gift", and I did not think that was weird! Something to think about I guess!

It's specific to the getting ready stuff. It's not taking the time to consider 'will the recipient enjoy/use this after the event?'
A gift doesn't have to be expensive but it should be something that won't get tossed into the Goodwill bin when they get home.

Slippers would be a nice keepsake.

I gave my girls robes because I wanted them to match for photos, but I also gave them gifts that weren't wedding related and more individualized to fit their personalities.

While not my bridesmaids / MOH, just my two best friends helping on my big day-
I bought one a “sloth” shirt and wine glass (she loves 🦥)
And the other I bought a makeup case that says something like,Will be best friends until we’re old and senile and then will be new best friends and two freezer safe whiskey / bourbon glasses
I always buy things that are personal to them or our relationship.

I gave my bridesmaids matching pajama sets with their initials monogrammed on the front, and I paid for their hair and makeup (however, I didn't consider these 'gifts' because they were wedding related). Therefore, I got each bridesmaid a nice piece of jewelry as their actual 'gift.'

I got mine monogrammed flannel shirts for our Halloween wedding. The girls chose a red/black checker and mine is white/black. We have to travel from the get ready spot to the venue before putting dresses on so I wanted something we could wear for awhile with leggings and then take off without ruining hair and makeup.

I am giving silky pj sets that are monogrammed with their initials. I have a pair in white, and theirs are dusty blue. I found them on Etsy, and they came out great!

Actually, anything you get them wedding related, to be worn at your getting ready or in the wedding like matching jewelry, is not considered a gift. It is a prop for your look, your pictures. You can buy none of those or a dozen per BM. But in addition to such things, you are expected to get a gift chosen as you would choose a birthday or Christmas gift. Something chosen for her taste, or to match styles or colors she would pick out for herself, something she needs. Not chosen to complement what you and 3 others are wearing, like robes. Not 3 candles and a thing of bubble bath and a tote for everyone. Your bridal party ladies are individual people, though you may think of them as a group, and it is not very flattering when someone does the one same impersonal thing for all, as your gift. It does not have to be expensive. But the thank you gift you give is something personal, and supposed to be thoughtful.

My mom bought my girls matching PJs and slippers, but let’s be real— I just got them those because I didn’t want pictures with 10 girls in random sweatpants. Lol. She also bought herself and my MIL these matching long sleep shirts as well as slippers.

However, I also bought each of my bridesmaid a nice piece of jewelry (not meant to be worn for the wedding) based on each of their style/likes. I got a couple of nice diamond necklaces from Ring Concierge and some dainty Bony Levy rings from Nordstrom.

I got my girls Jessica Simpson slippers, waffle weave robes with their names on them (not with titles because I think it's tacky), Coach wristlets I found on sale, a handful of gummy champagne flavored candy for stuffing their bags, a tumbler, and cute little hankies that say "Name, keep your s*** together"...all gifts I would love as a BM. Thank goodness there are only two of them!
