Bridesmaid Dresses - velvet

Megan, on August 26, 2019 at 9:30 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 18
Hi all!!

I’m having a fall wedding and LOVE the look of velvet for the cooler seasons. I’m wondering if anyone has had experience wearing velvet dresses? I want to make sure my bridesmaids feel comfortable, not like the fabric is clinging to them and making them self-conscious.

Here’s what I’ve found already... I love this dusty/ English rose color. I originally found it in the Jenny Yoo Logan dress, but that dress is almost $300. (I love this dress so much but I feel like it’s too much to ask for my friends to spend!)

My alternative was to go to Etsy. I found an infinity velvet dress in the color I love, and I think it could look very figure flattering, and it’s $160.

I’ve read up so much about the cons of infinity dresses, and it seems to come down to the material sticking to where we don’t want it to, and the dresses coming untied. I’m just thinking that if they’re in a thicker/ not as shiny material than I would avoid those problems?

Any advice/ suggestions/ experience is GREATLY appreciated.

I know this is really long, thank you so much for taking the time to help!!

What’s the return policy on the dress? If they’re able to be returned you can always have your bridesmaids order and see how they fit. I think David’s Bridal also has some velvet dresses that may be cheaper and they can go in and try them on.

The Jenny Yoo can be returned, but that’s the more expensive dress.

The other one from Etsy, I’m not sure. I’m assuming it’s non-returnable but that’s just my experience with Etsy.

Unfortunately I haven’t found anything at David’s Bridal yet!

I like the look of velvet, but in my experience, it is a pain to actually wear. I have really dry skin and regardless of how much lotion I wear, the item is always sticking to me and tangling up my hair.

I wear velvet dresses all the damn time, I LOVE them.
What I've learned from wearing them all at different sizes is that the fit is entirely dependent on the style. If you look good in a dress of the same style in a sturdy cotton, you'll look good in it in velvet, same goes for when you don't look good in it. It's one of those materials where if its body con, it's gonna stick to your body, but if it's flowy, it's going to sit wherever the largest part of you pushes out like any other dress.
The Jenny Yoo dress will definitely show any tummy that someone might not want attention drawn to, the fit looks very straight. The Etsy dress would show a little less, but both fits would make me self conscious (apple body shape right here). I think a tulip skirt, circle skirt/A line or even a wrap dress would be more comfortable for someone self conscious in the tummy department.
However, both of your picks are gorgeous! Maybe ask your bridesmaids which one they prefer?
Velvet also has a nice feeling in my opinion, the side that sits against your skin is usually pretty smooth. My only issue would probably be that in lighter colored velvet, sweat shows pretty easily and looks very weird on the material (discolors). Doesn't seem like Fall would make that a problem for you though.

Grace, thank you SO MUCH for your incredibly thoughtful response. I’m glad to get the feedback of someone who wears velvet!

I’m also tummy-conscious, so I’m totally down with finding a wrap dress!! Thanks for the suggestions!

My sister is wearing the Jenny Yoo logan dress in black for my wedding and looks AMAZING in it and she's curvy. Seriously love that dress - it's beyond flattering. My other sister tried it on too and loved it but I'm having everyone wear a different style velvet dress. I have been finding it on sale often at both Nordstrom and BHLDN. We actually got hers for $70 so you might be able to find it at sale prices.

I am also looking at the same Jenny Yoo dress for my bridesmaids in emerald color. I was thinking if they paid $300 on the dress then they could wear any heels and do their own makeup/hair to cut costs! Still deciding though. Maybe ask the girls how they feel about $300?

I’m purchasing hair and makeup for them as a gift and (we’re all getting it done professionally that morning) and won’t require certain heels. I know it won’t be a problem for one girl and it WILL be a problem for another. I was thinking of going with a cheaper dress or just covering the difference if I decide to go with the Jenny Yoo.

I just picked out my bridesmaids dresses yesterday, and i have then in the Jenny Yoo Marin dress in english rose!! if you have girls that are all different sizes, the wrap style seems to be the most flattering on them all. Where i went offers a discount when you buy a certain amount of dresses, so overall the Jenny Yoo will be $275. My girls have until March to order, so they all agreed thats enough time to set aside money for the dress. hope this helps! ❤️
