Bridesmaid dresses..help!

Danielle, on September 17, 2014 at 1:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25

My bridesmaids tried dresses on at David's Bridal, and I found one that is beautiful on all of them. Problem is, 2 of the 8 bridesmaids don't like strapless dresses. So does anyone have any ideas on how I can alter the strapless chiffon dress that we picked, to have sleeves and not make it look tacky? I'm stressing out over here!

Here is the dress:

I am pretty sure all of the strapless dresses come with optional straps that can be added (spaghetti strap style).

Would they be okay with that?

If not, I'd look for a cute bolero to go over it, it might be cheaper than adding sleeves/matching colors.

Don't listen to Vanessa, it's very kind of you to want your bridesmaids to be comfortable in what they're wearing and the right thing to do.

I'm not being catty, honest. Just had to comment that your post made me feel better about a small bridal party. How do you do it? I don't have it in me. 8 bridesmaids!? I'll be lucky to get the 2 I have on board with schedules let alone taste in dress. I am letting them choose their style/my color choice. 8 bridesmaids? They can alter the shoulders but it would cost them/you extra money. If it is reasonably priced I would let them use alterations to fit their style. Are they going to want to deal with the alterations and potential extra cost is another story. Edit: just saw pic of the dress and I would think that dress can be altered into spaghetti straps or even a cap sleeve different from the material in the dress.

Ask DB to include extra fabric to create spaghetti straps for the ones that dont (this could be due to support or being self consciousness and shouldn't be too hard on them).

I knew I was going to run into the same problem with mine so I just let them all pick a long, chiffon dress in Violet by Bill levkoff that they like and it worked out great! (link shows a photo of 4 of the 5 dresses chosen)

^^ @ Vanessa that is ridiculous, there is a difference between a bridesmaid not wanting to wear something because they don't like the colour, but this could be very much more likely a case of being uncomfortable. I am very busty and can NOT wear strapless. 3 of my bridesmaids now also cannot and I would never try and force them too.

Danielle, just order an extra yard of fabric, that is what I did for my BFF's wedding when I was the MOH and have them attached by a seamstress whichever way you like.

Most of the dresses come with a spaghetti strap option. You could allow them to add the spaghetti straps.

( I empathize with them. My MOH is VERY large chested - so we got a halter top dress for her instead of strapless. and I used to be kinda pear shaped - and one wedding I was in with a strapless dress I kept having to hike it up all evening and I was very uncomfortable.

90% of my bridesmaids are my family. Sisters, cousins, etc.

As for the dress...my 2 sisters don't like the way their arms look. So it would have to be sleeves. Not the spaghetti straps. :/ I want them to be comfortable in what they are wearing. I don't want to force them into wearing something that they hate. I just don't have the heart to do that. Plus, they are paying for it so I feel they should have at least some say in what they wear.

Sometimes David's dresses come with spaghetti straps but if not I'd tell them tough nuggets! My SIL had her girls wear these and they looked beautiful on everyone!

Maybe - if it's just their arms - a wrap or shrug? something the other BMs could remove later during dancing?

I'm doing the same color, fabric and designer and they can pick their styles (strapless, one strap, v-neck). My BMs range from ages 40-13. I have been one of those who hated the strapless but never would say anything to the bride so that is why I went with this approach.

Most of my DB strapless dress have come with attachable straps. But, I'm envisioning just on strap that loops around the neck. Sorry, missed your last comment. I would suggest a shawl over straps or a shrug. And spaghetti straps are the devil. My SIL picked out a BM dress with spaghetti straps and I was in pain all night. They are torture to busty girls.

I think that's the same dress my bridesmaids are wearing, but they are wearing black! Three different body shapes and I guess I lucked out because they all really liked the dress and are looking forward to being able to wear it after the wedding for other events.

Agreed with the others, you might be able to get spaghetti straps added on, or maybe a wrap of some sort would help them feel comfortable with their arms. You could just end up going with a color and material and let them choose the neckline style, that way they get what they are comfortable with.

If they don't like their arms I'm not sure how adding a strap and not sleeves will help with this?

Personally, if I didn't like my arms I'd be doing push ups and free weights to not be a pain to anyone....especially if I was 1 out of 8 people...that's just me, I'm not saying you should tell them to do that, I would just not want to inconvience someone (especially a bride) like that.

I am happy to see that you are doing what you can to make your bridesmaids feel comfortable, that is important Smiley smile I know there are options out there where you can add short lace sleeves to dresses like the one you are having them wear. An alteration shop can do just about anything these days!

You want all of your ladies to feel comfortable and confident for your big day. If you're not set on having them all wear the exact same dress, how about something like this for the ladies that want sleeves? It's the same material and has a similar cross-pattern across the chest. I think they'd look fine together!

Both of my bridesmaids requested not strapless. This was very very hard considering that is the style right now. They usually come with spaghetti straps (which don't solve the problem for women who want to wear a bra with straps). You can order additional fabric or (someone once suggested this to me), you can buy some thick ribbon that matches your dress and use those as straps rather than the spaghetti straps.

I completely disagree with pulling a "it's MY WEDDING and they will have to suck it up" type of attitude.

I'm really busty and I'd prefer strapless over spaghetti straps... yuck.

I think for arm issues, a wrap is the best option. Sleeves can be very unflattering to arms, depending on the length.

Here! It's a chiffon shrug, three quarter length sleeved which might be longer than you want but comes in lots of colors and could match the dress perfectly.

I had the same issue w/my bridesmaids at first. Two wanted some coverage and the dress is strapless. This is a sheer chiffon wrap for $20 from DB. I spoke w/the seamstress and she said she could use it to make an illusion neckline on one or both shoulders or they could just wear it as a wrap?
