I don't know average but I was very conscious of the budget restraints of my BM's. I picked dresses from Davids bridal that were on clearance and my girls spent $65 plus alterations.
Depends the designer could run from $150 plus.

My bridesmaids aren't going to wear the same dress (same color, just different dresses) and I picked out a range of dresses in a range of price points from which they could choose

I would say $175 to $200. I remember paying $185. My girls paid $175 if I'm correct..
I've only been in 2 weddings. The first wedding, I paid 98. The second wedding I paid 160. For my wedding the dresses were 130 with tax but I paid the tax, and shipping for my girls.
Edit: I should add that the 2 times I was a bridesmaid, I was lucky that I didn't need alterations, but you should budget for that also.
My BM dresses were $140 which is pretty reasonable. There are more affordable and more expensive choices out there depending on the kind of fabric, designer and your location though.
I'd say average is about $150. Remember, there are other costs to being a bridesmaid. Basically, how much would you want to pay for a dress that you don't get to pick out and will likely only wear once?
I paid $175 for the wedding I'm in and my girls will be paying about the same. I would say this is the average price for a long dress at David's Bridal. Shorter dresses will tend to be cheaper due to less fabric.
Around $200-250 for most common bridesmaid dress designers like WToo, David's Bridal, Bill Levkoff, etc., but that's not to say you can't find something cheaper or on sale. Ask each of your bridesmaids PRIVATELY what they are comfortable spending. Don't do it in a group setting, if 3 girls say they can spend $300 and 1 girl knows she can't comfortably spend that she may feel bad admitting it openly and then put herself in a bad situation.
I tried to keep mine around $120 but found some gorgeous ones on sale for $160, so I threw in on them. My one BM said it's the cheapest dress she's ever bought. I personally wouldn't want to spend more than $150 on a dress and alterations.
Ours were $99 for a short dress and they were on sale. Hopefully they will have minimal alterations and the dress fortunately has re-usability. So $100-150 seems like a decent median.
