Bridesmaid dress alterations

Trista, on July 29, 2019 at 7:06 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21
Hey everyone. I'm super frustrated so I'm hoping someone can help me. My 16 year old cousin is one of my bridesmaids. Her mom took FOREVER to pick up her dress from my mom and now the time to do a free return has passed and the dress is too small. This is the back of the dress. Do you think there is a way that something like a corset could be put in to allow for extra room? Thanks

Have you tried calling the company to explain your situation to see if you could get a bigger size? Some companies may be willing to bend the rules on special occasions so I would try that first and then I would quickly get to a good alterations person to see what they can do for you

I think a good seamstress should be able to let the dress out a little!

I agree with Cyndy said. If the company can exchange the dress, it will be better than altering it.

I’ve heard that Azazie has excellent customer service so it may be worth the phone call. Otherwise I think something could be done with it if you find a good seamstress.

I called, they'll let me return it, but we'd have to pay a 35% restocking fee, so we'd lose about 40 dollars on a 109 dollar dress. Such a ripoff.

For all the brides out there I think we can all agree to buy bigger rather than smaller, because it’s easier to take things in. That said, you’ll prob spend $40 letting it out. Most dress have 2 inches of Lea-way. Does it need to be hemmed at bottom? Use fabric from bottom, use triangle to put where zipper is and have a lace up back.

Sounds like that's her moms problem for procrastinating. 🤷‍♀️

That being said... I'm not a seamstress but with this dress, I think adding a corset might look a little odd. Because it would be a butt corset?

I was wondering if it would look odd. There's only about 5 or 6 inches that wont zip. I wonder if it's possible to do a small corset?

Can she lose weight? Wear a slimmer or else only option to try and let out.

Ok. That wont look as odd as my imagination had it.
It doesnt sound like it is excessively far from fitting. I'm sure a good seamstress can come up with a couple solutions.

She's only 16, I would never ask her to lose weight for my wedding. That would be so hurtful. I did consider shapewear, but I didn't know if that would work enough.

Yeah, not a good idea. You don't want the girl to feel bad. It's her mother's fault this is happening. Since mom is a seamstress, and she caused this issue by her procrastination, and it sounds like the dress almost fits, maybe she can do whatever within her skills to let the dress out, or add a corset.

Alternatively, I would just pay the restocking fee and get the next size up. That actually may be the quickest solution, and one you know will work. It sucks, but what are you going to do? You're running out of time unfortunately.

I think a corset on this dress would look very strange. And would look like an afterthought. I would have her mom pay the $40 restocking fee and order a dress that fits and be done with it. That way you know the dress will fit, it will look good, and it will teach her mother a lesson on procrastinating.

I would let the seamstress and your aunt/cousin handle it- azazie dresses usually have a generous seam allowance so it's very likely they can let it out and the dress will zip fine. This isn't your problem though.

I would find a seamstress to let it out. I don't think a corset will do much and if she finds it uncomfortable she might not want to wear it.

Funny story... my mother-in-law waited until THE NIGHT BEFORE THE WEDDING to alter my 2 sister-in-law's (junior bridesmaids) dresses. She had the dresses for 4 months... so tons of time for her to do it (she knows how to do alterations) but she picks 9pm on the night before the wedding.

Let the seamstress mom handle it. A corset would look really odd and it's mom's fault for waiting.
That being said the restocking fee isn't that bad either. 🤷

If it's their policy, I'm not sure why it's "such a ripoff" due to the customer's mistake. If you were past the return date, they didn't even have to do that.

It's a "ripoff" because they get to turn around and sell the dress for full price again. I was looking for advice, not unwanted and unnecessary opinions. Go attack someone else. Thanks! Have a great day!
