Brides with long torsos

Jess, on February 25, 2016 at 7:37 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 6

All the posts lately about being busty have reminded me of something I realized AFTER my wedding that I wish I would have thought of BEFORE I ordered my dress... even if you're not "tall", if you have a long torso, it might be worth it to see if there is a tall option. I know some designers simply add a couple of inches of fabric to the bottom which wouldn't help, but if they actually scale the dress up a little it could make a huge difference.

Why does being busty remind me of this? I received a lot of comments about looking like I was going to fall out of my dress, but I can assure you, I was cinched into it so tightly nothing even jiggled. After getting my pictures back and thinking about how the dress fit, I realized the problem was that my torso was too long for the dress. Even though I'm almost 5'8", I only have a 28" inseam - I'm all torso. When my dress hit me where it should in the waist, it just barely covered enough to make me decent up top.

I can’t believe I didn’t think about this before ordering my dress since I have so much trouble finding shirts that are long enough, or that I didn’t realize this during fittings.

Below is a pic that shows where my dress hit up top. I was in no danger of a wardrobe malfunction, but I can see why others thought I was.

So there’s my PSA for the day! Hope this will help someone else who might be built all weird like me.

I have an incredibly long torso, too. Mermaid and drop waste gowns just did not look flattering on me because of it! I don't think you look like you're falling out of your dress though!

I have never thought about this. I'm going to remember this when I try on dresses. I constantly have a problem with shirts being too short and I have to avoid low cut pants like the plague. Thanks for the tip!

With ordering dresses, yes there is an option to have additional length that is pre set by the manufacturer. The dress consultant who takes your initial measurements should measure you from shoulder to floor or hollow to floor and compare it on the chart of the manufacturer to determine if additional length is needed. You may need alterations to cut the excess material, but it is much better than adding (though I have ways to do this tastefully as well).

I am the same way. I didn't feel confident in anything straless because of my small bust. I went with a sheath because it conplimented my height and long waist.
