Brides that have some fitting appointments…how did it go?

Rachel, on September 29, 2021 at 11:40 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 11
Hi, Everyone!

I have my first dress fitting appointment in a little over a month and I guess I just wanted to find out how yours have gone if you’ve had a couple already? I picked up my gown in April and while I still love it, it definitely didn’t fit as well as the sample I tried on when I bought it (the bodice is a little too loose and doesn’t hug my curves quite as well as the sample did). I know this is common and a good seamstress can get it fitting a little better to my body. I’m also planning on discussing bustle options.
Did your gown end up looking as great as the day you bought it? What alterations did you have done? Did you bring your veil with you to the final appointment to see the whole look come together? Any before/after photos are welcome, too! ☺️

I took both my veil and my shoes. I LOVED how the dress fit me once it was altered. I lost a decent amount of weight so it had to be taken in 2 sizes from when I originally tried the dress on.

Great to know! ☺️ It’s amazing what these seamstresses can do to get our gowns looking perfect! That makes me feel a lot better about the bodice on mine!

Mine looked amazing after being altered! I took my shoes to my first fitting appt (don’t forget to also take the undergarments you plan to wear day of). I had cups sewn into the bust, the straps adjusted to be convertible (off the shoulder for ceremony and on the shoulder for reception-just by adding a midden snap!), and the bottom hemmed. I also took my veil to the final fitting to see it all together. Brides that have some fitting appointments…how did it go? 6

I’m curious why you are having a first fitting already. Isn’t your wedding still 8 months away? If so, I would caution against altering your dress this early! 8 months is a long time and your body could change drastically.

My first appointment is just to see how my dress fits as is and then discuss the timeline for the other appointments leading up to my wedding, sort of like a consultation. My body most likely won’t change TOO much, I don’t plan to lose much weight (if any), this is just to get my other appointments lined up and set in stone 😊

Ahhhh gotcha! That makes sense. I really don’t have any experience with bridal fitting‘s yet, but I will say the dress looks absolutely gorgeous on you! 🤩 And I am sure your seamstress will be able to make it look like it did in the first photos.

Fortunately my dress fit like a glove when I bought it. For my dress I added off shoulder sleeves. For my first fitting she basically needed to see what all needed to be done. My second fitting I needed my shoes so she could hem it. My next fitting (3rd) will be a try on of it heemed and sleeves officially added. Also the bustle. The last fitting will be how to bustle the dress. (Make sure you record that part so you can show it to the person bustling ur dress.

We initially expected daughter's dress fitting to be a slam dunk...and figured the only significant alteration would be the bustle. The dress was a little big in the bust, but we thought that would be an easy (cheap?) fix. LOL It ended up being more involved than we expected. I think she ended up having at least 4 appointments and costs nearly doubled (from the $250 initial estimate to about $475, as I remember). The sticking point was getting the bust tight enough so that she was held securely in the dress AND the bodice didn't wrinkle below her chest. The final solution was to add two different sets of pads to the bodice, one pushing up from below and one smaller set filling a small gap above her breasts. She's naturally a 36DD, so the LAST thing she expected to need was additional padding, but it worked perfectly! The padding held her tightly within the boning of the dress and lifted her chest enough so that the bodice didn't wrinkle. The alternative was that they completely remade the bodice; which would have cost hundreds more and once they did it, there'd be no going back. If you have a good alterations team, ask a lot of questions and engage them in conversations about your options. Good luck!

I had three fittings. First one took in the sides and placed the straps I added, second one did them hem and bustle along with minor adjustments to the first fitting adjustments, third one was the final fitting. At all appointments I brought my shoes, my dress was 6 layers Spanx were not needed. The salon had my veil so I was able to see the whole package at the final fitting. My wedding was in August and the fitting appointments were June July and August.

I took my veil, shoes and bouquet to see the desired effect. I added sleeves, got it taken in by my arms, and got a bustle. I loved the end result!
