Bridal Style - Naturally Curly Hair

Casey, on November 3, 2017 at 10:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 35

I have curly hair. Super curly hair. Like, the kind of hair that inspires complete strangers to ask my extraordinarily pale, freckled self if I'm "all white."

I don't wear my hair straight. Ever. In the three years FH and I have been together he has seen it straight exactly once, after a hair cut when the stylist insisted on blowing it out.

It takes at least 2.5 hours to straighten it properly (yes, for professionals). Plus we're having a July wedding in Florida. So I'm absolutely not looking to straighten (or straighten and then recurl) my hair on my wedding day.

The "curly hair" gallery in the Inspirations section of WW is all hair that has clearly been curled with heat tools. Not helpful for those of us with curly hair.

All this to say...my hair is about shoulder length and very curly. Any suggestions for styles? I generally favor partially up styles (but not full updos), but that's flexible.

Thanks!

So I feel you, as a fellow curly haired girl. I know the pinterest pics have "curled" not "naturally curly' hair, but I don't see why it wouldn't work just as well for curly hair, they just don't have to use an curling iron and instead can just add some gel or whatever to shape your natural curls.

Maybe a halo braid and some curls hanging?

@Rusty the only thing that is going to make my 4 billion pencil-width curls look like anything resembling the 16 cascading 1" barrel curls that are shown in bridal pics is...a 1" barrel curling iron. Plus half of those are actually wavy hair, or straight hair with four curls, or would require serious extensions (which, again, I'd have a super hard time matching to my actual texture).

@Malayia Yeah, I've been thinking some sort of braid is probably my best option. One benefit I've found of curly hair is that braids hold pretty well.

Yeah. I'm almost 50 and my hair forms full ringlets still. It's a very sexy adult look.....yeah. not so much. My FH loves it down but if the wind gets to those curls they go a bit rogue. I'm still thinking about doing an updo or braided bun so I don't have to worry about it.

Yeah, I get that. I didn't know how small your curls are (my natural curls are about 1 inch diameter).

What about these, but obviously your hair is shorter? No picture is going to exactly match anyone else's hair, for lengh, layers, texture, color, etc. So all require some imagination of what's different for you:

if you do have super curly hair I think this is STUNNING for shoulder length hair:

I feel you. My hair isn't super curly but when trying to get inspiration and all you find are heat styled curls or textured curls (such as those with African American hair) its totally different.

This is what I really wanted, but I've come to notice the top of my head doesn't actually have curls and a curling iron can't curl it either. But this might be something you could do?

If you have time and if there's one in your area, maybe make a trip to see a Devacurl hair stylist? They only work with curly hair and might have some style ideas for humidity and good hair products to help it stay put on the big day. That's my plan too since I also have very curly hair and am getting married in a literal greenhouse lol.

I think that pencil thin curls is a similar texture to my hair and many natural African American hairstyles. I know you're indicating you're not mixed but I think looking up some styles with that texture of hair might help, like in Rusty the Dog's last link.

A couple examples that I found. There are many that don't have a lot of braids or are strictly updos.

My curls are about the size of my finger and I straighten it alot. I have been taking Natures Bounty Hair Skin and Nails vitamins for the last 6months and I have gotten about 6 inches of growth and plan on wearing my hair to the side. I agree with Mrs. B that Deva Curl is the way to go

You should feel like yourself on your wedding day and you shouldn't even bother with a style that you know won't work. Straightening your hair before dealing with heat and humidity for hours will result in a halo of frizz. You can do a looooot with kinky/coily/curly hair and it will be beautiful so long as you find the right stylist. You don't want someone who insists on"taming" your curls (unless that's you want). As you reach out to stylists, ask if they can style "textured" hair and ask for images if they have them. A good stylist will honestly tell you if they have the right skills or not.

I would opt for twisting some of the hair from the top half of your head back to keep out of your face but also provide some volume. You could also just clip a segment back with a pretty clip or headband and make sure you use your best defining and volumizing routine and call it a day.

Me and similar to what I wanted and didn't get. My stylist was 45 minutes late for my hair appointment. It cut into my eating time, AND she didn't do what I wanted at all. I hated it!

I wore mine to one side to show off my curls, but also have it off my neck so I would be cooler when I danced the night away!

    This was my inspiration hair

Some of these posts are super helpful! I'll definitely specifically look for textured and maybe look into Deva salons in the area. I get my hair cut at a Deva salon at home, but our wedding is a few hundred miles away and I'm not as familiar with the area.

Others are literally exactly what I said I saw tons of and found useless, so that's fun I guess.

"Others are literally exactly what I said I saw tons of and found useless, so that's fun I guess."

Maybe you didn't mean to come off this way, but people are genuinely trying to help you and that comment came off as super ungrateful for their effort in searching ideas for you. Without a picture of your hair, people aren't going to get a perfect idea of what will work for you. Plus if people don't have curly hair, it's hard for them to understand what different types of curls mean and how they don't all style the same.

@Casey, people aren't meaning to send you "useless" pictures, but I do think you need to be able to imagine a little bit. As I said, no picture of someone else's hair will ever look exactly like your hair. We don't know your hair, so we are trying. Plus, a general style of how hair was pinned half back would be the same for basically all hair types, just how flat the hair got before it was pinned and how the tight the curls were left that weren't pinned would be different, so you really should be able to use almost any style inspiration picture you want, with a little imagination of how it would look on YOUR hair. Everyone's hair is going to be a little different, not just yours.

This is my hair. I have shitty hair. I've had shitty hair my entire life. It's frustrating business. I shouldn't have gotten annoyed at strangers that were trying to help me. I apologize for that. But because I've had shitty hair my entire life and would really like for it to look decent on this one day, I've got a lot of emotions tied up in it. Again, my fault.

I lack imagination. I can look at hairstyles that look similar to my texture and shorten them or change the color in my head. I've never been able to look at straight hair or obviously heat curled hair and extrapolate how that would look with my psycho shitty hair. Again, that's on me.
