What is a wellfare party? Sorry I have never heard of it before

I have no idea what a welfare party is, but it sounds tacky. I'm picturing an online party where people write you checks. I really hope I'm wrong.

You don't host your own shower and honestly I'm not sure what the etiquette is about hosting your own farewell party. Are you wanting/expecting gifts?
