Bridal Shower gifts .. to use or not to use?

Future Mrs. T, on September 17, 2012 at 12:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

The old superstition says don't use before the wedding incase the wedding falls through... anyone following this? Or did you go home and reorganize the entire house with all the new fun and updated items??

I used some of the stuff, and my mom was like NOOOOO DONT DO IT... but I just read online it all depends on how superstitious you are (and I'm not) so it looks like I'll be unpacking all my awesome new stuff and organizing everywhere!

What did you do?

    I'm not superstitious at all.

But many things can and do go wrong before the wedding. People end up postponing/canceling for any number of reasons. I didn't use them not because of superstition, but if anything happened that would make me have to return the gifts, it's much easier to do so if they haven't been used.

Everyone that is invited to your bridal shower and attends is expected to bring a gift. Usually the Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom host a Bridal Shower in honor of the Bride to be, and the Bridesmaids have one too, but now this is being replaced by the Bridesmaids as a "Bachelorette Party". You never know if the wedding is going to be called off for whatever reason. This should not prevent one for having a Bridal Shower unless the bride absolutely doesn't want one. In my day when I got married, a broken/cancelled wedding, it is a courtesy to return all gifts from the shower, and wedding gifts given prior to the wedding.

Well if something really happened and I had to return the gifts, I will go out and buy the same ones and give them those LOL

We will be using and unpacking everything after the wedding. As tempting as it is to use all those anazing gifts (and it's super tempting!) FH and I feel that we should wait to enjoy them since they were intended for our life together as a married couple.

There are usually signs that one should not go thru the wedding..however, if the relationship is a solid one..there is no reason to be superstitious!

My bridal shower was a couple weeks ago and this past weekend we decided to go through everything and use our gifts. If something happens I will buy what we used and the stuff that is still in boxes that we would use occasionally I will just send back. I hope nothing would go wrong though. We already live together and have been together for 6 years and we already have all the money saved to pay the whole wedding off just have to wait until a couple of weeks before for the vendors.

And please note, my comment was not at all meant to pass judgement on your decision to use them. Just sharing our thought process in holding off.

Also, it gives us something to look forward to once we come home from the honeymoon Smiley smile

We aren't going on a honeymoon for like 2 months, so I will want to use the stuff before that. We live together and the things I really want to use are our new dishes and drinking cups. Not everything....yet

My co-workers thru me a "sprinkle" last Wed. I recieved two gifts from the registry - coffee maker & blender, and a collection was taken up for a cash gift.

I did use the coffee maker this weekend with a joke thrown at FH that - "Well, I can't call the wedding off now - I'm using the coffee maker!"

Granted, yes, if something were to happen I would have to return the gifts to my coworkers - I am hoping nothing horrible happens!

I used my keurig and my cherry pitter Smiley smile besides that I am using all of my serving platters for the BP brunch the morning of the wedding. Future Mrs. T, are there signs that FH is going to cancel? LOL

We aren't using our gifts until after the wedding. Not for superstition reasons, but for me, I wanted to wait until we were married to use them. Also, after the wedding, since we are off for a few days, we can go thru all of our old stuff, and be able to add all of our new items and start fresh! Smiley smile CANT wait to purge all of our used, passed down, unmatched dishes, silverware, sheets etc etc! lol. Smiley smile
