Bridal Shower Alternatives

Krystle , on April 17, 2016 at 8:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

I am marrying into a very large, conservative, and traditional family and I am struggling with the idea of having a shower. I come from a very small family (only my brother and a few distant cousins), so the thought of being in a room with the spotlight on me is terrifying. My fiancé and I already live together, so we do not need to register for much. I know my FMIL is expecting that I have one and my MOH has already started planning. I am looking for alternatives that will help solve this dilemma.

Well, a shower is to give gifts. So if you don't want to receive gifts, perhaps a tea party?

How about a recipe shower? Instead of gifts, your guests bring a favorite recipe. It's still a thoughtful way to help the bride "set up home" without having to really expect people to shell out for a gift.

Some people specify that they would not like gifts. Speak to your MOH about putting that on the invite. When it comes to actually having the shower, if people are planning one for you I don't think that you can just say, "I don't want this." That would be rude, but showers usually involve games and things so that the focus doesn't have to just be solely on you entertaining everyone. Maybe come up with a plan with your MOH for this.

I second a recipe shower. I love the idea of it but that might be because I suck at cooking and any help is appreciated.

I wasn't thrilled about having a shower either, but mine was yesterday and it was actually a lot of fun! I was super awkward about being the center of attention, but my family already knows I'm awkward! I like the idea of a recipe shower, but who says you can't register for upgraded versions of what you have?
