Bridal Show “scams”

Mrs. J Robinson, on November 27, 2018 at 10:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

I know a lot of people are extremely skeptical on stuff like this, so I said that I was going to follow through and post what happens! Earlier this year, my MOH took me to a bridal show to see if I could find some vendors to use for my wedding. Although I didn’t pick any of the vendors, I did end up winning some prizes.

I got calls from a number I didn’t recognize, but she left a voicemail saying that I won a gift card for 2 wedding bands, trip for 2 to the Dominican Republic, Mexico or Bahamas..it’s a 2 night stay to an all inclusive Wyndham Resorts, OR we get a USA giveaway for 2 anywhere in the US. All we had to do was go to a cooking demonstration to get the prizes.

My FH and I both were also skeptical at first, but the presentation was only 15 minutes from our house so we were like why not. We went in knowing we didn’t have to buy anything, and that was perfectly okay. The guy wanted us to buy the cookware, but he also wasn’t pressuring us whatsoever. We were the only ones who showed up so it was more of like a Conversation than anything. Since we were the only ones who showed up and we couldn’t decide on what trip we wanted, he ended up giving everything! (Still can’t believe that)

I am making this post because I wanted to give a little insight on my experience since We used the certificate for our wedding bands. The bands were from JVL Jewelry. They have decent bands, but not a large selection of choices. There were only Tungsten and Titanium bands...which works for my FH, but I was just a little upset that there would be no rings to match my engagement ring...but I can’t be too mad since they were free lol.

All bands are around $398 I think, so the certificate was good for any two bands we wanted, regardless of price. If we wanted to get them engraved, we could have for $20 (which I thought was amazing)..but we ended up ordering the rings without it. All we had to pay was shipping which was $25 per ring. The rings said the estimated delivery time was 3 weeks, but we got them within one week.

I expected there to be something wrong with the rings when they came in, but they honestly look amazing. I thought it was a scam all the way up until we got the rings, but I’m really glad we decided to give it a chance. It was one of the easiest things I’ve ever ordered. I plan on wearing mine if I’m working out or something like that and my FH is BEYOND happy with his. It fits perfectly on his finger (his ring size is 13/13.5) and almost looks better than the ring I got him 😂.

I’m not saying that every experience would be as easy as ours was, but I think if you win a prize that you’re skeptical about, research the hell out of it first before you decline. It’s sketchy that it seems like everyone wins these prizes, but if they actually follow through, then I’m okay with that. Like I said earlier, we also won the trips for our honeymoon. We are using that for our honeymoon so I will leave a review on that too once we use it...but so far, this gifts have been a blessing and have saved us quite a bit of money overall.

Let me know if y’all have questions!

Some of those demonstrations and stuff actually are the real deal. I remember my parents telling me they went to a couple, one was for a free weekend trip to Vegas and the other for a free huge Thanksgiving turkey (it was a long time ago). The Vegas trip the guy was so angry because they wouldn't buy anything he was selling but they still got the trip. The second time, they told the guy that honestly all they came for was the free turkey and the guy just said okay and brought it out without wasting any of his or their time pitching sales at them.

Research is always needed and you should always go with your gut instinct. If it seems way too good to be true or way too sketchy, even after you're there and watching whatever sales they're pitching, then leave. They can't force you to buy or sign anything, all you had to do was show up and watch their sales pitch, requirement to buy is never part of it.

Question I went to the same presentation and was also skeptical about this as well. Have you used the trips yet? TIA

Hey Melissa- not yet. We’re using it in March. We had to pay a registration fee of $177 I believe before we were assigned to a travel agent. I definitely didn’t like that, but after the trip $100 of that is refundable...it’s also refundable if you change your mind and decide you don’t want to go on the trip. The day after I paid the deposit, the travel agent called and asked which location we were looking at and we had to tell her what we wanted while on our honeymoon.

One thing that I thought was cool was that they could use the certificate for a longer stay. For instance, ours was only for a 2 night stay in Mexico, however she was able to use the certificate towards the entire time we wanted to stay so she got us a cheaper price for an all inclusive stay for 8 nights at one of the hotels on the list. Another thing I really like was that the certificate isn’t restricted to the hotels they have listed. She was able to get us cheaper prices on other hotels in the area.

The hotel that we picked with this agent was $1500 all inclusive (minus flights since we already bought them) with a ocean view balcony. This same hotel that we tried on book on our own all inclusive was $2200.

So far everything has been good. It’s the same procedure as we would have been going through if we have picked a travel agency on our own. Things might change once we actually try checking into the hotel, but I am planning on leaving a honest review of our experience once we complete our trip.

Great review. Thanks so much for the details. We ordered the rings from the same company as well and my FH loves his so much.
