Bridal shop made me feel insecure

Futuremrsm, on October 3, 2019 at 7:33 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17
So I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but my last bridal appointment made me sad. I waited 9 months for my dress to come in. At the time that I ordered it, they measured me and told me I was a size 0. I told them I'm usually a size 2 and that I feel like a 0 would be too small. They assured me it would be fine. Sure enough when my dress came in, they needed 2 people to help zip it. I literally could not breathe in it. They kept saying "it would let out" in a bit. I had the dress on for about 20 minutes and I still could not breathe. I have already been unhappy with my weight in my stomach area, and of course this is where the dress was the tightest. I have an appointment in january for the first fitting, since they also forgot to order a sparkly fabric that I'm adding to the dress. I just didnt really feel beautiful in it because it was making me look all squished. Ugh. Hoping that after the alterations it looks okay. I just wish they would have ordered the size i said I was.

I don't think you're making a big deal out of nothing. If you told them a 0 would be too small, they should've believed you and ordered a size 2, it's much easier to take a dress in than let one out. I would go ahead and take your dress to a seamstress and ask them if it's possible for the dress to be let out however much you need to. If they say anything other than "sure thing, no problem", I would go back to the dress shop and tell them that you need a size 2 like you told them from the beginning. Hopefully a seamstress will say it's an easy fix!

My moms paying for the dress and wants to use the bridal shop seamstress. The seamstress said they can let out the dress it's no issue. But her words were "well if we take it in or out, its basically the same thing"

I dont think it is. I feel like its easier to take out fabric than it is to add it.

I also signed off on the size with no returns, so I just have to hope the seamstress does a good job fixing it.

I totally understand feeling that way. At my appointment the first dress I tried on the size was a perfect fit. I chose the second one I tried on, it was 2 sizes to big and I was clipped in. She told me she'd order the size from the first dress. She didn't. She ordered a size to small. I didn't want to be one of those brides who orders to small of a dress deciding to diet to fit in it. I didn't want that stress. I was mad. The dress fit at my first fitting, barely.

I'm stressing too girl. The sample was a 12 and they had to clip it. All the dresses I'd tried on all day were a 6, my measurements said I needed an 8 everywhere but my waist. An 8 was a 26 inch waist and mine is 26.5 inches. They told me to order a 10 but I'm worried it's going to be too big and they're going to have a hard time taking in the bust area because of the fabric. For as much as I paid, they better figure it out.

I completely understand your frustration, but I do also believe dresses "stretch" a bit as they are worn. Especially if it's currently pretty snug on you, as you try it on repeatedly, I think the fabric will naturally start to "give" a little. With your wedding a year away, and starting your alterations in January (which, seems REALLY early; normally, about 3 months before the wedding is fine), I'd try to relax and give everything a little time.

FWIW: When daughter chose her dress, the sample was a size 8, and it was HUGE on daughter (they were clipping in a good 4" in the waist). She measured as a size 10, and I had my doubts, but they assured me the sample size 8 was VERY stretched. I couldn't figure out how woven fabric could "stretch" that much, but daughter signed off on ordering a size 10. When the dress came in, it was pretty close to perfect. I know a sample dress is tried on a LOT more than your dress will be, but it sounds like you just need it to be slightly looser. With a year to go, and both the fabric relaxing and some basic alterations as possibilities, I think you'll be fine. Try to relax. The good news is your dress zipped, so it's not too far off. Smiley heart

I get that, but the fabric that was tight was the top, which is a very thick lace that has no stretch. I literally had muffin top near my arm pits and on my back. Even if the dress stretches out a bit, I still think I look fat in it. It literally squeezed my stomach in but then my stomach went out when the lace ended and the ballgown bottom started. I felt like I was just squished in the top

Girl I feel ya. I measured a size 4 even though I’m a street size 4. It was definitely tight when it came in. I went to my fitting and she assured me that 1) it does indeed stretch and 2) there are multiple things that can be done to make it fit better. Adding a corset (even a small one), adding in material under the armpits that can easily be disguised so it looks like it was always there, etc. I strongly advise going to a great seamstress with really good reviews and a lot of experience. You need someone who is going to do a stellar job and presents you with multiple options.

I understand, but since it's non-returnable, unless you're seriously thinking about buying a new dress and trying to sell the one you currently have, I'd try to focus on the expectation that the dress shop seamstress or someone else will get your dress to look perfect on you. I wasn't trying to discount your current feelings, just offer some reassurance, that, especially with how much time you have, they will likely get it to fit exactly the way you want it to. Good luck!

I would probably bring it up with alterations, let them know you said you were a size 2 but a size 0 was still ordered. It's kind of annoying to pay for alterations when you told them to order your true size?

I told my mom to bring it up because she paid for the dress, but she is a very passive person and never wants to make a fuss so she said she will just pay for alterations.

Could you email the store manager or call them yourselves and see if there is anything you can do?

They said they're going to alter it to be let out. Idk if they're going to charge for it. My mom is paying so it's up to her if she wants to pay for it.

They may not have to add any. The seam should have about 1 inch of give I think it will all be okay they will just let the existing fabric out. This stressis one of my worst nightmares im so sorry its happening to you but breathe and I feel it will be okay.

It 100% does not have any give. I had the dress on for 2 minutes and could not breathe fully the whole time. It gave me armpit muffin top and made me look like I had back fat. Even the seamstress said it had to be let out.

I understand. I just mean they will undo the seam and it will have 1 inch of extra fabric inside the seam and they will let that out--no extra fabric required.
