Bridal Party Confusion

Melissa , on November 3, 2019 at 2:33 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14
My FH and I got engaged a little over a year ago now and I still haven’t done a BP proposal. My best friend of 10 years and sister pretty much know since it’s a no brained but my other ladies don’t know. I feel like I have waited too long and because I am not the type of person to call or text them 24/7 I’m somewhat scared they won’t want to. Out of the 8 ladies I only live in the same town as 1 so I don’t see them often either. My anxiety is kicking in and I don’t know if I have waited too long. Please help!!!

Not too late at all. I live far away from all my girls and it was fine!

There's no such thing as waiting too long. Your wedding is still 11 months away, so now is the time that you should be asking them anyway, no matter when you got engaged.

This was a sigh of relief. Most of them I met in college and we ended up in different cities

How did you approach the question for them?

Not too late. I still got nervous when I knew my girls were going to say yes.

I wrote on a card asking if they would be my bridesmaid and gave them each a pair of fun socks.

For all the cards I left them in places I knew they would find or I mailed it to the girls that lived out of town. I didn’t want to be around when they received them because I was nervous too ☺️

I sent email invites! I didn't want to give it away and ask for their addresses so sent it via email.

I was nervous too, but whatever happens will happen!

Most people talk to their prospective bridesmaids between 8 and 12 months before the wedding, even if they have a much longer engagement. A lot of problems can come up if you ask too early. So you are fine to be thinking about it now for October 2020. Bridesmaid dresses usually take 2 to 10 weeks then come in after ordering, not 4-6 months, so most do not need to shop before 4-5 months out, and for some makers, much closer to the wedding. People do not want to pay $120-$250 on a dress, then have to pay $200 or more to alter it, because of wt gain or loss, or pregnancy, so shopping closest possible to the wedding is best . And showers and such usually happen in the last 3-4 months. Your timing is great to ask in the next few months.

You're better to ask later than too soon. The typical is one year out because bridesmaids don't even have much to do role-wise well before a year and not even a year out. Typically you start looking for bridesmaid dresses less than a year from the wedding! You're right on time.

I think you're fine waiting this long. I wouldn't ask any later than 8 months out though, just for the girls to be able to plan for travel & PTO & budget for dress/shower/bach and all that. I had 9 bridesmaids, only 1 lived in the same state as me and she still lived an hour away. It all worked out fine.

I have three ladies, my daughter, my sister, and my cousin. My sister lives out of state, so I was going to just ask her over the phone, as we talk several times a week. I planned to ask my daughter and my cousin when we went dress shopping, as they would be going with me. The day before the shopping, my sister arrived as a surprise and announced she came to go dress shopping with us!! So I decided to just ask all three of them while we were dress shopping, so I could do it in person. They all said yes!!

It doesn't have to be fancy, just personal.

It's not too late to ask. I didn't do a proposal when I asked everyone in my bridal party. I personally think it's a waste of money. I just sent them an IM and asked if they'd be part of my big day. Some people probably think that's lame but all my bridesmaids were thrilled to be asked
