Braces at the wedding?

FutureMrsGerke, on October 24, 2017 at 5:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Okay, totally having second thoughts right now. I had an appointment with my orthodontist today for braces to help with my TMJ. Everything sounded great, they put the spacers in, but now I'm trying to sleep, and him kind of freaking out. My treatment plan is for 18 months, wedding is in about 8. My doc mentioned that we could put the braces on, then take about 6 of them off the top the month before the wedding. My smile would look normal, but I would still have full brackets on the bottom....Has anyone done this before? I know in the pictures it will look fine, but I don't know how I feel about everyone seeing them when I talk, eat, say my vows etc. Anyone have any pics if they have done this? Advice? I'm thinking about just delaying treatment until after the wedding now.

I would ask if he can remove top and bottom and put back on after the wedding, even if there was a charge to do so. Another option would be a plan that uses Invisalign, they could remove the nubs they attach to teeth and put them back after the wedding.

Don't sweat it. Nobody will even notice! They'll be too focused on how pretty you'll look and I have never been close enough at a wedding ceremony to see the bride's mouth. Go ahead and start your treatment. You only get one body and you should take care of it. 8 months worth of treatment can make a huge difference.

Removing the top ones sounds like a good idea and will make for better photos. Do you see your bottom teeth when you talk? I don't think you see mine, but maybe check in the mirror. I can say as someone who got married with full braces on (both me and my ex had braces on our wedding day), you'll be happy to not have them show in your pictures! I don't think you need to delay treatment. I too had TMJ and the sooner you start the sooner your pain will subside.

I have braces but the ceramic kind. They didn't show up too much in our engagement photos and that was from an inexperienced photographer who did zero editing. I thought about removing them for the wedding but I couldn't justify the added cost just for a day especially since I'll be taking them out 6 months after. I'll just be removing the wires and nothing else. Our new photographer should be able to edit my brackets out whenever they do show. Maybe ask your photographer about it and see what he says.

I had braces when I was younger and you could never see the bottom ones in pictures or when I talked. I also don't think I'd notice braces that were just on the bottom. You'll talk normally so saying your vows won't be an issue.

I have bottom braces. I think you could see them in an 8x10, but not a 4x6. If we order 8x10 of our engagement pics, I might have her try to edit them some. However, she said editing ability can vary depending on the person. She takes the "white" from your surrounding bottom teeth and puts it over your braces. She said she had a client once whose teeth were so small that the brackets covered most of them. So there wasn't enough "white" to pull over to cover the braces. My wedding is in June and I'll probably make a plan for what to do about my braces in May. I'm mainly concerned for how jaw surgery might change my face right now!!!

Here is zoomed out more (so the braces are even less noticeable)

This is super personal so it's hard to say. I had braces as an adult and hated every minute of it. But I think taking those top ones off temporarily sounds like a great solution. By 8 months you should be pretty used to them, and bottom only ones shouldn't be particularly visible and shouldn't affect you too much eating or speaking- wise , so it really doesn't sound so bad to have. PLUS, if you could get a reprieve from jaw pain, that sounds ideal! I think minimally noticeable braces would be wayyyy better than jaw pain at a wedding!!

I love that your dr is working with you on this Smiley smile

I'm in the same boat. I have braces and I always figured i would pay to have them removed for the wedding, since I would still have like 5 more months of treatment afterwards. However, I just had to have the top of my braces removed cause my orthodontist moved the brackets. It would so annoying and hurt when they were scraping the glue off! I did not want to have to go through that again - I am now thinking about just leaving them on for the wedding. I don't know, I'm still deciding.

I was very self conscious of my braces when I had them, so I don't blame you for considering removing them for the wedding. I will say that this sounds like a incredibly painful plan. I've seen some people with the clear brackets that are hardly noticeable! I would ask your orthodontist if that is an option.
