Boxed Wine

Keisha, on April 1, 2017 at 2:01 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 24

I got a suggestion on another post to get boxed wine.

What type would you recommend for the reception? How do you know how much to order?

I plan to purchase the wine and hire a licensed bar tender to handle the "bar" which will have wine and beer.

No, no, no. Please buy bottled wine, even if it comes from Trader Joe's.

There are a lot of boxes wines at can be better than cheap bottles; Bota Box, Black Box are two. But you want to decant them into something more aesthetic....

Boxed wine is definitely fine as long as it's quality. I like Black Box myself.

I second both the bota and black box.. and the suggestion for a decanter to make it prettier..

However check into a sams or Costco membership- or even your local farmers market. We ended up getting our wines from a mix of our farmers market and sams for less than 8$ a bottle--for higher end wines that usually cost 12-20/bottle in smaller wine shops

Thank you all! I'll definitely look into all these options both boxed and bottled!

Will the box or bottle tell me how many glasses it serves? Im unsure of how much to purchase for 65 guests?

Some box wine is good. I like black box. I would do something to hide the box though just to make it look nicer.

We're providing the wine for our after-party, and we were told that you can expect 5 pours per bottle on average. I'm not sure how much more or less a box holds, but the average glass of wine is 4-6 ounces, if that helps.

About 20 glasses in a 3L box. Btw, if there is a Whole Foods in your area they sale bottles of wine for $2.99

The average glass of wine, as @Delfina said, is about 6 ounces. I think you're supposed to expect everyone to have a glass or two per hour. Look up alcohol calculators on Google. That should help.

I went to a wedding that apparently served boxed wine, but I had no idea. The bar was high and we couldn't see what was being poured. I only found out while wedding planning when a BM told me.

You can look up a drink calculator online.. generally you can count on one drink per person per hour. We had 85 people bought enough for 115 on that scale--and didn't have much left, but we also had a heavy drinking crowd.

A bottle of wine will give 3-5 glasses depending on the bartender. A box of wine is equivalent to 3 bottles I think.

Just a note on average pours; make sure you're not using giant wine goblets. It sounds stupid, but when we changed rental companies (and glasses) we went through twice the amount of wine, lol!

I like black box wine. I think there's the equivalent of 4 750 ml bottles per box, but it's something you can look up for sure. I did boxed wine for my wedding and with the glass being poured behind the bar no one can see what it's coming out of.

I am in the wine business, so I come to this discussion as a wine professional.

There are boxed wines out there that are actually good. In fact, there are some high end wines that are now available in a box. Le Vieille Ferme is one that is very good. I have not had Black Box, but have heard that it is doable.

As Celia mentioned, you will want to have the wine poured into decanters or carafes, do not put a box of wine on the bar.

Also, as she mentioned, the size of your glass pour will determine how much you will need. A standard pour is 5 ounces. In a 3 Lt box, you will have approximately 20 glasses of wine. Your glass should also be large enough that the wine is poured at about the halfway point. Do not use a glass where the wine is filled to the brim.

Here is an example of a 5 ounce pour in a Rose' glass...you can have a bit smaller glass, but again, do not fill them up to the brim..it allows no ability to swirl and smell the wine. Okay, enough of me geeking out. :-)

I drink Bota or Black Box wine at home all the time. It's cheaper and I don't have to throw out as many bottles. But for your wedding, I would definitely use a decanter.
