Boxed wine advice

Casey, on March 24, 2018 at 11:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 20
Y’all. I am a bit of an alcohol snob. I only like craft beer, am particular about wine and liquor. It was suggested to us by the venue that we consider boxed wine for the wedding (we are purchasing our own alcohol) to help with costs and transportation. I was super wary - Wine from a BOX?! That I’d serve to guests?!

But my parents and I (FH is OOS) decided to give it a try. I looked at the forums on here and online and found some small boxes (like juice boxes, lol!) to try. Here are our thoughts so far:
Good: Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are passable. Mom actually loved the Cabernet and drank 2 glasses! I’m not big into white wine so I don’t completely trust my opinion but Dad said it was a solid Chardonnay.
Bota Box Merlot is also not bad! Definitely tastes like merlot. Mom did not like it, but I informed her that’s just what merlot tastes like 😂

Not so good: Black Box Pinot Noir. Lacked body and tasted kinda like metal.

I want to try a few more kinds of the bota and black box as they were the top rated/mentioned ones and so far they have some good varieties! I’m going to try the same ones a few different times and buy them from different places as I’ve heard about a lack of consistency in taste.

Have you considered boxed wine? Do you have any brands or varieties you drink or would consider serving?

*For context about my wedding, the bar is designed so it’s a service window, and no one will know they are drinking boxed wine because of the set up.

I think if the guests can't see the boxes you will be fine on the serving. Some box wines don't taste good at all to me. Unfortunately i can't help with the brands as I'm not big on wine. Sorry I couldn't help much on the selection.

Hey no worries! I completely agree, I literally had never tried boxed wine and wouldn’t have except for this reason! But I really do like the black box Cabernet!

    Thanks for the advice!

If no one is going to see the box then go for it! You might also get prices from local wineries if you have any, most offer a discount if you buy x amount of bottles. And if you get them early, you can pick it up and deliver to the venue yourself and save some money that way. Good luck!

Thanks for the tip! With that in mind, we’ll definitely do some shopping around with local wineries. I’m really proud of all the local businesses that give my otherwise boring hometown a lot of culture! For example, I live near dogfish Head brewery and distillery! I’d love to be able to get all local alcohol if it’s in the budget!

If I have wine at all, I will be doing boxed wine. My step-FMIL and her family drink boxed wine regularly if they aren’t in the beer mood!

I actually really enjoy the Black Box wines. I wouldn’t judge anyone negatively for having them. I’d do it at my wedding if there was an easier way to be discreet.

Were doing Bota Box boxed wine from delicate and fH mom works for them so it’s a great deal. Either way boxed wine is so much cheaper. We taste tested and it tasted just as good as some bottled wines.

We buy bota box and black box regularly. I think it’s bota box, not sure though, they have a ‘midnight’ varietal that is a very rich, deep red, I love it!

I saw that in the store! It caught my eye, I’m going to have to try it soon! Apothic Dark and the other deep red blends are my favorite.

TH and I have been trying different 1.5L bottles to see if we liked any for our wedding in October, but we are huge Botabox Redvolution fans and just keep coming back to it as the best and most affordable option. I'm so happy to see other brides are on the boxes wine train, it makes me feel better about serving it!

Yes!! I mean honestly if you find one worth serving and you can hide the aesthetics of it, why not!

Black box definitely has the best boxed wine. I believe we had the cab and the riesling for our engagement party and they were big hits. We also had some bottles to give more variety, but for the wine consumed in higher quantities the boxed wine was perfect!

I mean as long as it tastes good and the guests can't see that it is coming from a box then I don't see a problem with it.

I wouldn't, because I'm a oenophile and I can't find wines I'd enjoy in boxes (except for making sangria) so I won't serve them to my guests.

We are serving wines that we drink ourselves at home. It's a little pricier, but it's important to me.
