Bouquet Handle Help

Lauren, on August 11, 2020 at 11:06 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 7
I just finished putting my bouquet together using sola wood flowers and I love how it looks, except for the base. It has a more wild look and I wanted to have stems visible at the bottom, but the floral wire I used for the flowers is too thin and looks fake. My partner suggested wrapping fake or real stems around the taped wire, but I don't want to buy fake flowers just to use the plastic stems and I'm worried that real stems will turn brown if I don't add them close enough to the wedding. Any suggestions for how to make the base look like a real bundle of stems?

I used fresh flowers, but I was curious so I looked up "sola flower stems." I found this link to some that look good. https://solawoodflowers.com/products/bouquet-kit-add-on. There are also several etsy stores that seem to have good options.

Do you happen to have a picture? It would help seeing what you are talking about. Also maybe wrapping ribbon around the handle or weaving it between the stems but to hold it together? If you don't want to plastic looking stems maybe doing like a foam or what PP have said? I was thinking paper straws might actually work with the wire too.

You can use dry grasses to cover the stems. People use straw brooms as filler to. I will link a tutorial for you!

So here's a picture of what the bridesmaid bouquet handles look like, and what my handle looks like. I wrapped all of mine in floral tape because I thought maybe I could just wrap it in ribbon or lace, but it's a very large bouquet and the handle is the width of two pencils, so it looks really fake. I do like the idea of straw or bouquet grass. And maybe I can add something else before that to make it a bit thicker.

Thanks for the link! I thought I watched every tutorial that Oh You're Lovely had, but must have missed this one. It's an interesting idea and it looks nice with those flowers, but my bouquet has some hanging greenery and I'm worried that the yellow color may look funny mixed in. Won't know until I try though!

You could use alfalfa hay? It is more green it would just take a while to pick out he good pieces.

They do sell fake stems to put over the wires.

I just wrapped all nice in floral tape and then wrapped them in twine.

I think if you wrapped the tape around again it might make it thicker. Is that what you were going for? You could definitely do the straw or bouquet grass too!! Also, adding a ribbon or maybe even green pool noodle might work so then it's squishy and thick enough for you? You could cut the sides down in the middle of the noodle if it's too thick. I know with mine we wrapped the wires together then wrapped plumbing tape (gives a little more structure and holds better than floral tape) around the base until they were smoothed out then we are putting ribbon around them.
