Bought a dress from sample sale

Missy, on December 23, 2013 at 5:43 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

And love it! It's in mInt condition which can be the downside of a sample if not. I am getting a little nervous post purchase because it is the sample size (size 8). And I generally wear a 2 in normal clothes (probably a 6 in a wedding dress). Has anyone experienced sizing a dress down this much? The bridal consultant said I would want to take it in through the zipper and sides and possibly add boning to bodice. They said expect to pay anywhere from $300-600 for alterations. I just we any to make sure it fits perfectly! Also for such alterations would you start earlier than 6 weeks before wedding as suggested?

I bought a dress that a bride never picked up. it is about 5 sizes too big. We are starting alterations 8 weeks before wedding. It is getting sized down but also putting ina corset back. Talk to your seamstress, see what she/he says about your alterations timeline. Good luck and congrats on finding your dress

I dont think this is excessive, I think they can size it down up to like 4 sizes! Mine is a size 4 I believe and we are taking in a good 2-4 inches in the bodice. I normally wear a 0 in regular clothes.

They can take a dress down the max of 10 dress sizes before they have to reconstruct the dress - you are totally fine Smiley smile

Shop around for a seamstress that price sounds a little excessive. If you are really worried about it being done in time start earlier. I was told my alteration will likkely take about 3 mos, I also bought a sampe dress, its ony about a size too big unless I manage to drop a dress size whivh would be nice. It needs, serious Hemming.& im probably having her cut off the train which is good, I might also ask for a slit, depending on cost. The seamstress I talked to at the event quoted me about $150 to take it in & hem it. Also tho I said I didn't care if the stitchkng was visible on the hem, noone will be lookig at that.

I think going down a size or two isn't that big of a deal. I really love that dress. It's gorgeous!

Mine was a sample too, a 12 and I'm a bridal size 2. My seamstress was awesome and did a beautiful job and charged me 400 when I expected 600. I think that estimate is right on target.

Are you sure your a 6 in wedding dresses? I am a 2 in regular dresses and when I tried on wedding dresses the size 2 was too big.

I was told that wedding gowns are typically two sizes larger than what you normally wear. Judging from most of the comments, it seems like it won't be a big deal to size it down a couple/few sizes. I wasn't swimming in it... but it was definitely too big. The consultant suggested taking it in in the sides and through the zipper. And adding boning if I wanted.

Your dress looks beautiful on you!

As far as dress sizes go, it varys depending on the designer. I wear a street size 6-8, and my dress was ordered two sizes too big so they could alter it properly. When finished, my dress should be a size 6-8. Taking a dress in, or letting it out two sizes is no big deal.

Very pretty dress! Mine was a size 10 and I normally wear a size 4. There were no problems taking it in (so far). We added cups and taking it in on the sides. My dress has tons of lace and beading which caused me to worry, no worry needed. Good luck!
