Boss asked who paid for honeymoon...

Sos0033, on June 7, 2017 at 6:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

I saw my boss today (I see her maybe every couple of months) and she asked where we are going on our honeymoon. For the record, we are only going for a week and nowhere super extravagent. She then asked "was this gifted to you, or are you paying yourselves?" Super weird question IMO, but I told her flat out "nope. We are paying for it." To make things weirder, I just happen to be due for my annual review where she is determining how much of a raise I will get- if any. I can't help but think she was passive aggressively saying "well if you can afford your own honeymoon you seem like you don't need a raise." She can be weird about money sometimes, but my coworker was present for this conversation and also thought it was suspicious/super strange. UGH.

Eeep. That would make me nervous too. Especially since you don't see her but for once every few months.

"She can be weird about money sometimes"... are these conversations that you have regularly with your boss? If so, you shouldn't be. She is your boss, not your spouse. Your finances should never be discussed in the open like that, especially with other people around. Let this be your lesson.

You should have told her that wasn't an appropriate question. Can you report her to her manager?

@Future Mrs. Mash, I think her boss asked, twice.

I'm not sure how to respond to "was this gifted to you, or are you paying yourselves?" in a nice, deflective way other than "it's none of your business" or "that's inappropriate" - which is a very blunt thing to say to your boss in the heat of the moment. I agree with @Christy, that the best you could do would be to follow it up with " but we got a great deal!"

But you know, hindsight is 20-20

@Future Mrs. Mash not at all what I meant. She can just be kind of "cheap" I guess. Nothing to do with me specifically. I do not regularly discuss my finances "in the open," but thanks for the advice...

I mean you said you discussed this with your boss and another coworker, so I'm not sure how else that was supposed to be taken... and my response to you was a question, not an assumption. I said IF you are, you shouldn't be. Meaning I'm not sure if you are or aren't. No need to get defensive about that, lol.

Anyways, if you have already said it, not much you can do now except avoid it moving forward. And since you mentioned she's the owner of the company, there's not really anyone to report her to, which kinda sucks. Since it's already been discussed, I would just be careful and more mindful of discussing these things moving forward.

@jenny exactly. She's literally the owner/founder of the company, so it didn't feel appropriate to say "that's really none of your business." I actually did follow it up by saying we found a great deal on flights etc. but then I kind of regretted saying that too because it's really none of her business either

Hid my comment because it might've been rude.

I'd just not discuss wedding shit with nosy people especially my boss.

ETA: sorry then OP, my brain has things all kinds of mixed up. My bad.

Ps I hate nosy judgey bosses

    That is so shady.

I'd be very tempted to bring this up at your review and based on her response maybe report her to whatever authority you can and start searching for a new job (don't quit yet, but start searching). I'm so sorry your boss can't behave like a professional.

@Future Mrs. Mash, OP's post literally reads: "I saw my boss today (I see her maybe every couple of months) and she asked where we are going on our honeymoon."

No where does it say OP was standing around the office water cooler, blasting her wedding plans and finances for all to hear. Besides, everyone has to talk to their boss (or at least HR) about their HM eventually because presumably people take time off of work.

@futuremrsmash just trying to clarify that I'm not the one initiating any discussions regarding finances. I actually try to keep my personal life very quiet at work. This topic only came up because I requested vacation time for my honeymoon. I had no idea she would ask such a question and another coworker just happened to be in the room at the time .

Hind sight is definitely 20/20 and I too would have been caught completely off guard. True, it was an odd question. Now we know to be on guard with her in the fact that she does not think before she speaks.

The boss I had when I got married asked a few questions regarding mine and FH wedding/honeymoon/etc. Not as direct as yours but still .... He gifted me a week of PTO. I was less than 2 months new to the studio.

You never know why she asked but I would still be on guard from now on. No matter the reasoning behind it, it's still an odd/inappropriate question.

Hoping this works in your favor.

Definitely a weird question and inappropriate of her to ask in my opinion.

@Sos0033, I never implied that you're walking around bragging or openly discussing it, I actually asked you. Now that it's clarified, I understand that you're NOT doing that, which helps me understand that her question is weird. I was just saying it sounded like you were discussing it in the middle of the room with people around and then feeling like she invaded your privacy, that's all. I agree that she shouldn't have asked, but again... there's not really much to do at this point except be careful going forward.

Everyone is trying to copy and paste what you're saying like I didn't read it, which I did. So I'm sorry if you didn't understand what I was trying to say. It obviously is harder to read the way people say things through a computer screen. I didn't intend any disrespect.

    ETA: words

That's a nice boss Smiley laugh Probably one of the best (and most expensive) wedding gifts I can think of.

Hmm it's definitely a weird question, but I'm not sure it rises to the level of telling HR (since I assume there's nothing company policy or relevant law that prohibits it, and she is the owner) or searching for a new job. If you don't get a raise you expected, you should mention it then and say "I hope my husband and I's financial situation doesn't impact your decision. I expect my compensation to be based on the quality of my work product." I feel your pain though. The minute I got engaged to FH, I stopped getting raises because they know we don't need it. It's really messed up.
