"Booking" Family Members

Tamera, on September 4, 2019 at 4:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 4
Has anyone asked a family member (who is a hairstylist) to do hair and makeup for their big day? Or play music?
I am planning to ask a few of my cousins to do hair/makeup and play music, but I'm not sure how, since I don't feel like I am officially "booking" them, but would still like to compensate them for their services.
I was planning to get a nice card saying "I can't say I do without you, etc.", and something like a bottle of wine and a gift card.Has anyone else done something similar/had a similar situation of "booking" a family member or close friend?

I’m a violinist and my friends have hired me. They just said hey will you play at my wedding and I’ll pay you, what’s your rate?

My cousin is a hamu artist. We were actually just talking about that earlier today. She will be doing my hamu and then for my bridal party she will be doing their make up as well. I'm excited because she's super talented and I don't just let anyone in my hair.

If I received that card, I would think that you were asking me to be in your bridal party. Are your cousins professional HMUAs or DJs? If so, you should “officially book” them. You need a contract to cover both of you and they deserve to be compensated for their time just like they would with any other client. Also be sure that these aren’t people you want to enjoy your wedding as guests since they’ll be there as hired help instead.

Peggy has it down perfectly. I would just ask them if they will do your hair/makeup/music and what is the rate they charge? It's very possible that they will waive or discount their fees if they are close, but I definitely would not assume that. So go into it like you would any other vendor.
