Blood Tests... is that a myth? [illinois]

Mandi, on January 12, 2020 at 2:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
For some reason, I've always been under the impression that you have to get a blood test when you get married... is this a thing? Can I skip it if I'm in my early 30s and sterile?

I'm not exactly terrified of needles, but if I can avoid bleeding, I generally try to.

They used to do it NC to make sure you’re not related. But they don’t do it anymore.

It used to be a thing, but a lot of states have gotten away from doing it. It was primarily put in place to make sure the couple would be compatible when they have children. If the father is RH+ and the mother is negative, the mother has to have a shot in order to be able to carry children that have a high probability of being positive. If the mother doesn't get the shot there is a very high probability of miscarriage. Now that it's a lot easier to do tests if it's an issue, the blood test at marriage isn't as necessary.

Most states have done away with that. The only state that still requires it is Montana.

No medical tests for Illinois! You can look on the county’s website for where you’ll be getting your license, but the state doesn’t require it. We’re in IL and my FH is so bad with needles we would potentially be going to a different state to get married if it was required 😉.

I live in Illinois and got married here 7 months ago. Nope, no blood test. Just go to the courthouse and present IDs and that’s about it. They’ll give you a marriage certificate to take to the wedding and have the officiant sign.
