Black Tux - White or Ivory Shirt?

Elizabeth, on August 5, 2014 at 5:43 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

So we picked out FH's tux last week. It's the Michael Kors tux from Al's Formal Wear. My dress is ivory so the salesperson strongly suggested an ivory shirt. But FH found a silvery gray long tie that we both love that he wants to wear which he likes better against the white shirt. The salesperson is very worried that my dress will look dirty in the photographs with him in a white shirt.

With a long tie not a lot of the shirt shows and his black tux will be next to my dress so I'm thinking a white shirt will be fine. I'm attaching a picture of my dress.

Opinions of white vs ivory shirt? Am I overthinking this?

Since your dress looks a little shiny in the pic, is it satin? That distinguishes it from his shirt, no matter what.

One other thing to think about is at the reception, where FH will likely take of his jacket. You probably won't have as many formal pics at this point, but think about how the dress and shirt will look together at that point.

It's hard for me to give you a definite answer without being able to see the actual colors, but I really wouldn't stress yourself out too much over this one. My dress is blush colored (but I'm not letting FH know) and so I suggested ivory shirts, but I don't think white would've been a "bad" choice.

My dress is unique with a light ivory charmeuse slip then a lace over dress of white, ivory, and silver/crystal beading. So we decided that white shirts looked best with his black tux. He is also wearing a white bow tie.

I had a very long and stressful debate about this. My dress was VERY ivory. They guys were wearing black tuxes. Our rental place said that if I went with a white shirt, it would make my dress look dirty or dingy. However, after much research, apparently ivory shirts aren't a real thing outside of the rental world because it is so hard to get all shirts to dye to the same shade of ivory. I also think white on black looks nicer and the white shirt looks nicer when the guys take their jackets off. I threw caution to the wind and went with white and my dress still looked perfect next to it! Go with your gut.

Thanks everyone we'll stick with a white shirt. Hailey yes my dress is satin. Good point about the material setting it apart from the shirt.

My dress is ivory and FH shirt is white. I don't think it will make a difference.

Heres a pix of a white shirt with and Ivory vest. Maybe it'll help you decide. We went with ivory since my dress is ivory.

Our menswear place was the same- really pushing ivory since my dress was ivory. Their ivory shirt looked too yellowish too me. FH will be in a grey suit, and ivory would look weird to me. A crisp white looks soooo good with a grey suit. I told the guy I didn't care if my dress looked dingy, I didn't want FH looking weird. I'd rather FH look handsome. Plus, a lot of ivory dresses can photograph white with a flash. I took pics of my dress next to a white button up shirt, and it looks fine. I'm mobile or I'd post the pics.

From our perspective, the important thing is that you are comfortable with the end result. There are different shades of ivory from just a shade darker than pure white to a very buttery ivory look. If there is a lot of contrast, the rule of thumb is that it can make the dress look dingy by comparison. I don't think that's always the case but your mileage may vary and it may help to see a swatch of the dress next to the shirts in various lighting (indoor/daylight/etc).

In the rental world, there can be some variation in the shade of ivory based on the number of launderings a particular shirt has had. We've seen the most variation in cotton blend shirts and less in microfiber - you might check to see which version your tux provider is using if this is a concern.

    Good luck with you planning!

Im going to be in the minority here but we chose black shirts. Makes the white of the tie and vest pop.

I think white would look best!
