Black Tie: What would you expect as a guest?

Paige L., on August 28, 2019 at 4:08 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16
Hello WW!

So my FH and I both want a black tie wedding. Very classy. A little bit extra. The best party of the year.

I know that a black tie wedding is not just about the dress code, it is also about the experience, so I wanted to ask you all what you would expect as a guest at a black tie event.

So here’s what we have in mind right now:
- 100ish guests, mostly family and very close friends
- Ceremony will be in a large, stone cathedral and will be a full religious ceremony
- Full cocktail hour with a jazz band playing. Passed hors d’oeuvres, waiters mingling, and a full bar stocked with top shelf liquor (with a focus on scotch as my FH knows a tooooon about scotch)
- Plated meal with a salad course, soup, main, and a dessert (not fans of cake, so most likely petit fours)
- Live band for the reception with a focus on swing and salsa music. Full bar service throughout the night
- During the dancing, i would love for there to be more food available to the guests, but am unsure as to what

Would you all expect anything else at a black tie wedding? I am trying to find a valet service for the night to park cars, but other than that I do not know what to add. Any suggestions?

That sounds like what I would expect from a black tie event. As for food all night, you could do more passed hor d'oeuvres and maybe a station or two.

That sounds like an AWESOME wedding! I would be blown away if I was a guest to that kind of wedding. It sounds like you've covered all the bases, there's nothing else I could think of!

I like the idea of stations a lot. That way the waiters wouldn’t be in the way of the guests. Would you say charcuterie stations with light snacks or something a little heavier?

Thank you Amber! I am glad you think so. My family can be quite critical, so I am trying to double check all decisions with others to make sure I cover all my bases Smiley smile

I wouldn't go heavier after all the other food. You basically want just enough to cover those late night/been drinking for a couple of hours snack attacks. Your wedding sounds amazing.

This sounds very similar to what I'm planning!

-Full Service coffee and tea bar after dinner.

-Cigar Station outside on a patio. (optional, we aren't having one but I have been to several that do have them).

-Table service for wine and drinks during dinner (so that guests don't have to get up to refill)

-Limited party favors (Some things are fun, but other are not black tie appropriate -if you decide to do them at all)

-A few black tie weddings I have been to provided shuttles to and from the venue and the main hotel where everyone was staying all night rather than valet. Valet was available, but many guests used the shuttles.

-Sometimes Uber might offer a code if you pay them for one, so maybe you could get a code for your wedding.

-During the dancing, I think have a station near the coffee station with a charcuterie board, perhaps truffles and extra petit fours.

We have attended lots of black tie weddings and I would add.....butler served champagne upon arrival to the venue, various food stations during cocktail hour, table service for wine and drinks at dinner as well as coffee/tea after dinner. . In addition to the cake many of the weddings we’ve attended had large dessert bars/ stations. We were also provided with shuttle service to and from our hotel. It sounds like an amazing wedding. Good luck.

Valet parking, coat check, full open top shelf bar, pass hors d'oeuvres, plated multi-course meal (at least 4 courses), live band, extravagant centerpieces (tall, tons of flowers), nice programs, nice favors (we've been to two black tie weddings, the first gave a really nice glass Christmas ornament and the second handed out cigars), possibly provided transportation for guests, seating chart with place cards, a limo for the couple's exit, cigars, champagne toast (served either upon arrival or to each guest while seated), and I think that's it? That's what we have encountered at black tie weddings!

    Passed champagne at some point.

    Extra extra points:
Art deco or other elegant ice sculpture
    Palette cleanser between meal course
    Hors d'oeuvres hard to pronounce

Valet parking (or paid-for parking) would be expected as well.

I really love the favor ideas. I was having trouble thinking of anything, but you have given me inspiration!

The addition of champagne is a good one. I had actually not thought about champagne much at all as I don't really drink it. But you are right, it is am important part of the black-tie feel. Thank you!

You are definitely right about the champagne. It is an important detail that I had missed. As most of the guests will be local, I wasn't planning on offering shuttle services to our few out-of-towners. Instead, I was going to pay for Uber/Lyft codes for my guests and allow them to use those to get to and from the wedding.

    Thank you!

Everything sounds fantastic thus far! If you want food for during dancing I would recommend something light for he dancers (something with seafood or fruit) and something heavier for those trying to balance out their drinking (something with meat or cheese).

If you want to wait a bit you could do late night snacks for the hour before the end of the reception.

I would also expect champagne during the toasts, if possible.

A nice add-on if possible, which we did for our wedding, was a full coffee/espresso/tea bar. My family bleeds coffee so it was super important for us to have a variety. It was so well received (we had it available before the ceremony too which was what had everyone all giddy).

Anne, table service is a great idea for the drinks and I will talk with the caterers (when I have them finalized) about the cost for that. I really like the addition of truffles to the charcuterie board. Great suggestion!
