Black suit + Bowtie or Tuxedo + Bowtie?

S, on May 18, 2022 at 7:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

So my FH kind of rushed the process of getting his wedding outfit a few months back, and all I had were a few inspo photos of black and white outfits. I thought they were all black suits (but elevated with peak lapels) and bowties - there was a good deal at Indochino for custom suits at that time, and we just went with a black suit as opposed to a tuxedo. I don't really like the look of those high sheen lapels on tuxedos, so I steered clear of that look. Now I'm looking back and finding more photos from the grooms I had saved and am noticing that it may actually have been a tuxedo, just the fabric of the lapel didn't contrast the body of the suit so starkly, so it was subtle.

Now my question is - will my FH look silly if we just stuck with the black suit, white shirt, and black bow tie? I got worried because a forum on another website said that that combination would give off "wait staff" looks, and it got me worried... Our attire is formal, so a tuxedo would not be out of place, but I'd just want to find something without a really high sheen lapel. What do you all think - will it look low budget/tacky with a black suit or should we upgrade (cost wouldn't be prohibitive - the black suit jacket he now has could be used for other events as he didn't have one that fit him well, and he can probably just use the pants we made for the suit as long as we do the tuxedo in the same fabric - I wouldn't want that satin line down the side of the pants, maybe would just need to upgrade the button on his waist)?

A good quality tuxedo will not have the high-shine lapel of a juniors prom tux. Or your photographer will know how to adjust for that. There are other differences in the pants such as satin piping, flat front, and no belt loops. The dinner jacket has cloth covered buttons, the shirt studs, evening bowtie, and shoes are often patent leather or velvet (but less noticeable imo). I've never seen a dinner jacket wrinkle, so perhaps the fabric is different. The whole thing is a different look. You know it when you see it. If you mix and match top and bottom, you may not get the same fabric or shade of black. However, a suit is also becoming and definitely wedding worthy. What does your fiance want to wear? If you have a formal dress code and your guests arrive in tuxes, will he feel anxious?

Thanks, Michelle - yes, I've noticed that there are a couple of distinctions on tuxedo pants, but Indochino allows you to customize it and do away with things such as the satin piping. The thing with Indochino is that you can pick your fabric and then customize everything - one of those is opting for a tuxedo, but I think (as far as the jacket goes) the only difference this means with them is the satin lapel, satin touch on the pocket, and satin buttons as these are the only features that aren't customizable. I agree that a high quality tuxedo probably wouldn't give that high-sheen junior prom look, and I'm just not certain Indochino will do that based on photos of pre-designed tuxedos on their website lol.

My fiance wants what is the easiest, which would be going with what we've ordered now. I'm slightly worried about other guests arriving in tuxes since it would be totally acceptable with the dress code, but I had put a note on our wedding website saying "tux not necessary as the groom won't be wearing one". I expect very few people, if any, will wear a tux because much of our crowd is on the more casual side. If any do, I doubt he'll be bothered by it. As long as he doesn't look like wait-staff, then it could be fine? We designed the suit to look quite elevated and so it LOOKS like the cut and shape of a tuxedo, just without any satin trimming.

I think you'll be fine. You could swap out the black bowtie for white or one of your wedding colors if it really bugs you, but I doubt anyone will confuse the man of the hour for wait staff. There really isn't a HUGE difference between suits and tuxes, and the difference usually isn't noticeable unless you're really looking for it. As long as you and your fiancé like the look of everything, then I wouldn't worry about it.

I've seen quite a few grooms wear suits. As long as you both are happy with it I don't think anyone will even notice.

Oh I think he will def not look like a waiter on his wedding day, not with the prettiest bride on his arm. I don't know why men make that joke with each other. They're so vain.

You may be overthinking this a bit. Black suit
Vs. Black tux, not a lot of difference. Husband wears a tux, 2 x year. Most noticeable is the tie.
