Birth certificate for marriage license

Yana, on August 12, 2019 at 9:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hey ladies, I've started doing research on what I need to get my marriage certificate. We are living in NY and they require us to show our birth certificate in order to obtain a marriage license. My fiance was born in New York so he's fine but I was born in Ukraine and my birth certificate is in Russian. I believe I need to get it translated and notarized; does anyone know where I can get this done and how much it should cost? Thanks in advance!

Wow that seems so unusual. I am a legal alien myself and have been married before. Neither last time, nor this time did I have to have my birth certificate to obtain a marriage license.

Even when I applied for my green-card I did not have to get my birth certificate translated. Getting a green-card approved seems much more bureaucracy than getting married.

Does NY offer any other options of proof of identity and age? Passport?, Drivers license?

According to my research New York requires you to provide proof of age by providing them with Birth Certificate, Baptismal record, Naturalization record or Census record.

Proof of identity includes either a Driver's license, Passport, Employment picture ID or Immigration record (so i'd need to bring birth certificate as well as my passport)

I am in by no means claiming to know more about NY requirements than you do. However, I looked up the marriage license requirements and it looks to be the same for where I am at. All you need is one proof of identification and money to pay the fee. Your Photo ID should be sufficient enough.

EDIT: I did read where it said that you need proof of age, sorry I did not see that before. However, I also read that "You and your prospective spouse must have one form of proper identification in order to apply for a Marriage License. State law also requires documentation of proof of age. Since all forms of proper identification are also acceptable proof of age, holders of proper identification will not need additional documentation." - The City of New York Clerk's Office. So I think that means that your Photo ID can be used as a proof of age and proof of ID. But I could be wrong. I just know that where I am, all they required was a Photo ID and the $30 fee.

I’m in NY as well and all forms of proper identification are also acceptable for proof of age. So you won’t need any additional documentation.

That seems like a lot for a marriage certificate. Before I'd go through the trouble of translating it, I would contact the proper authority by either phone or in person and get clarification.

Thank you! i figured one form of ID is good enough since it proves my identity as well as my age but I saw a conflicting article saying I would also need to provide my birth certificate and if its not in english i'd need to get it certified and translated

Your state ID is enough proof. I’m getting my marriage license soon too so I had looked it up. You can also start the process online.

I would call the registry where you intend to file to be sure. They might be able to tell you an easier form of ID as well.
