Birdcage veil with hair down??

Mandi, on February 11, 2019 at 2:05 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
I've said yes to the dress! Pictures attached! Now I'm having this veil situation. I have expressed, and FH agrees, with the fact that a traditional veil is not happening. The awkward roots of it being a means of arranged marriage is kinda creepy and overall we just don't like the vibe of them. We just so happened to be watching a movie where a birdcage veil was shown and I immediately thought it was very classy and pretty and asked FH if he'd be more comfortable with that and he enthusiastically said yes. However now that I have my dress, I'm not so sure it'll go well with a birdcage veil. Plus I've decided to wear my long hair down with maybe a boho half up braid or something. I can't really find any photos that I love of birdcage veils with hair down. Would it look bad since Its mostly an updo thing? I've toyed with the idea of just having a mid length "veil" that just is attached to my hair and trails behind me, never covering my face. I've seen a lot of photos of that with my desired hairstyle and its very nice looking. What do you guys think?

You don’t have to cover your face when you wear a veil. I bought a veil but I am just wearing it with my hair half up and half down. I also haven’t seen the birdcage with hair down. I would just go with a small veil; then you can wear your hair up, down or in between!

I always picture birdcage veils with tea length dresses. With your dress I'd probably skip a veil altogether. You could do one that trails behind you, but I think a small flower crown would look great with this dress and add to the whole boho look.

It sounds like by ‘traditional veil,’ you just mean that you don’t want there to be part of the ceremony where someone lifts a veil off your face? In some ways, I feel like that’s become so uncommon as to longer be what comes to mind when someone says traditional veil. (Though that could be different in your area.) If it’s just the veil concept in general that bugs you, I would probably forego the mid length veil attached to your hair. I think it would look nice, but, well, that’s pretty much exactly what Queen Victoria wore (along with a flower crown) and she’s my bench mark for the start of modern western wedding dress traditions. 😂

So to go back to your topic question on birdcages, this is the one picture I found that was more bohemian with long hair and a birdcage:

I think it looks pretty nice. What little you can see of her dress does not read retro to me, which is usually what you get with birdcages.

As kind of another thought, there’s something about your dress that feels a tiny bit renaissance to me. I mean, it’s obvious modern bohemian, but I was reminded of Juliet caps when I saw it. Admittedly, if you just try looking for a Juliet cap now, they’re almost all attached to long veils. But back in the fifties, they were usually separate headpieces, more based off historical lines. I don’t think the decoration on this works for your dress, but you might look at the concept:

This is a more modern interpretation:

Anyway, I hope you find something you like. And don’t worry— if the day of comes and whatever headpiece you have doesn’t feel right, you can take it off. Your dress will be fine without it, and I’m sure you’ll look beautiful.

I was thinking the same thing about the flower crown. Maybe with a veil attached at the back or draped. My mother is totally against it so I've been trying to find pictures of small elegant looking ones to get her on board. 😂

Yes, that is what I'm referring to, I don't like the idea of it draping down over my whole face and having it lifted in the traditional manner. The one I was thinking about going with was more like the last one you posted with fine tulle instead of mesh, but even that looks more formal than boho. I do kinda like the idea of a juliette cap. I've seen some cute unique ones popping up on pinterest. I saw one that technically wasn't a cap, but a veil tucked under a flower crown that gave it a cap type of look and it was very boho and beautiful. Thank you! You WW ladies never let me down! 😘
