Biological and Adoptive Families

Sarah, on September 23, 2019 at 12:35 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 8

Hi everyone. I need a little help. I was adopted when I was 2 weeks old and my adoptive family is all I know. In 2012, I reunited with my biological father, maternal grandparents, and a maternal half-sister. My bio mother passed away when I was 6 and there will be a mention of her at the ceremony. My adoptive parents have requested an homage to her as they are grateful for her and maintained contact with her until she died.

My bio father, however, is extremely jealous of my dad because "he never got to be a dad". He has 3 daughters, myself and 2 others. He's had 3 chances to be a father and he's blown all of them. We talk occasionally, but it always ends up with me in tears. I shudder to think what my life would've been like if he had raised me. My maternal bio family is great and they're thrilled to be a part of the wedding. My fiance gets a long with them great. My fiance can't stand my bio father but he puts up with it even though my bio father has not earned his respect. I feel guilty not inviting my bio father to the wedding. My dad has stated that my bio father cannot walk me down the aisle, cannot have the father/daughter dance, which I don't want either way.

It's borderline toxic but I can't shake it. I don't want him to cause a scene even though I don't think he will, but I don't want to take a chance of him ruining it. I don't want that to be my biggest memory of the happiest day of my life. Do I invite him to just the reception? Or both the ceremony and reception, just don't give him a role? Any thoughts?

Leave his toxic behind at home. If he’s consistently making you cry and not being respectful of his place in your life, I’d just leave him at home. Harsh, maybe, but what I intended to do to mother’s husband. He died first though.

Don't invite him. You've said yourself every interaction with him ends with you upset and in tears. Do you want to end your wedding like that too? Your wedding is a happy day to celebrate with those who love and support you! Honor the good family you have and leave the toxic bio dad out of it! Good luck! Smiley smile

I wouldn't invite him. Just because he "made you" doesn't mean he automatically has respect. He gave up the chance to be a father when you were put up for adoption. If he doesn't want to act right he can stay home. You deserve nothing but love on your wedding day.

Thanks all. I feel a little better now that I’ve asked. It had been bothering me and all my family has said is “it’s up to you”. It’s still a year away but he’s had plenty of time to redeem himself. There’s only room for happy tears on that day!

Omg dont invite him at all! Cut ties. Hes already given you the best of what he has to offer (life), and its 10000% ok to say thank ylu so much and walk away. People like that feed on the guilt of good people lile you, thats how they hang on. Be strong and cut ties.

    DNA doesn't mean family.

Being there, loving you, taking care of you, showing up when you needed someone, being supportive and helpful and kind and loving and all of those things: that's family.

Your bio dad contributed a few chromosomes and toxicity to your life.

    Don't invite.

(My mother was invited to the wedding and decided to decline and make the rest of her family decline. Because she is toxic. My wedding was MUCH better without her.)
