Beware of Expo Shows

Beware of Expo Shows 1
Started getting these text messages. I was confused as to how these ppl know I’m getting married? We have t announced or posted anything formally and only our close friends and family know. So I’m guessing it’s from Bridal expos who might’ve sold my information? Because I got a lot of unsolicited spam related to wedding stuff after bridal expos ended. Just wondering if anyone else is getting this stuff? I almost wonder if it’s on here or The Knot but my phone number isn’t listed.

I think you make an implied agreement with the Bridal expo to allow sharing of your sign up with them for the event. You probably just need to respond with END, or Stop for each company that sends you text messages. It is a bummer getting emails and texts from companies you never heard of. That's why we are recommended to have a separate email for wedding planning, but that does not work as well for text messages. Also, I think it is safer not to go to marketing events to win a free vacation trip. Those might be okay if you are really dedicated to not buy anything. They may sell cooking pan sets, but it is better not to get stuff like that except as wedding gifts.

When you use a fake number, that puts someone else’s actual phone number at risk. Not a wise decision at all. It’s never required to share your number. Many couples set up a separate number via Google or a separate wedding related email that they can chat with vendors and delete after the wedding that doesn’t interfere with your actual everyday email.

Oh I agree! I’d hate to get numbers out of nowhere. It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where Elaine gives out her fake number and all of the drama that caused lol! The fake number is a great idea though and I wish I would’ve thought of that. It just occurred to me that maybe someone could use 555-555-5555 like they do in the movies? Lesson learned, but hopefully this post helps people out in the future.

Yes I will have to try that with END to the texts. The separate email is a good idea. I’ve been using my main personal email but am not stressed out because I plan on making a new email when I change my name and retiring the main one to use for online shopping that will probably fill up with spam lol. I didn’t sign up for the expos to win a free trip, we were mainly looking for men’s fashion consulting…one of the expos is the biggest one in the region and nationally known so it wasn’t really one of those smaller scammy expos. I was newly engaged and didn’t really do any research bc the expos were coming up fast. And we ultimately didn’t end up going anyway, but I believe yes - all of the spam is from one of the corny sounding smaller ones.
