Beware Macys! Has anyone had this happen?

Because I Said So, on October 8, 2010 at 12:24 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Last month I returned some placemats that were sent to us from our Macys registry. I had selected them online so I never saw them in person and when I got them, they weren't the color I wanted. So I brought them to the store and they gave me a credit- supposedly. What the cashier did was put a credit on the account of the people who bought the gift for us! That cashier must have been a plain idiot, knowing the return was a registry purchase, it obviously wasn't bought on my own account! She handed me a credit receipt for $35 so I went and spent that money which I thought was sitting in my charge account- NOT! Imagine my surprise when I got a bill from Macys this month- I wasn’t supposed to have any charges, only credits! And now our friends are probably wondering why we returned what they bought us.

So the dolt I called today at Macy's says she needs to call the store to talk to them and I have to stay on the line for her to do that. I'm like, no I don't, since you're not going to reverse this credit and give me my $35 from my friends’ account! I said if you need to talk to the store and tell them what they did wrong, don't waste my time in the process. That's an internal issue but they're not going to fix it because I wouldn't stay on the phone! Wonderful. I hope these people don’t think I’m totally weird for returning their gift! They actually sent us 2 gifts from Macys that came in 2 shipments, so I had to send them 2 thank you cards because when the second shipment came to us, I had already sent their note out. So that alone would make these people think I’m a flake. Then I return half the gifts they sent us, argh stupid Macys! I’m cutting my card up right now and closing the account. I only registered there because my fiancé insisted!

Yes, I've had an absolutely terrible shopping experience at Macy's (was buying makeup) and I've stopped shopping there since and have long given my business to Bloomies and Nordy. Out of all the "nice" department stores, Macy's is a terrible place to shop at these days. Just like your situation, I've yet to see a Macy's where the customer service is great (like it used to be when they were booming). It's turning into a JCPenny.

Macy's has gone downhill ever since they expanded and bought up other department stores like Hechts and Marshall Fields, those stores were fine, but then Macy's bought them and couldn't handle being in so many places and they've gone down the tubes.

I think another sign of them going downhill was when they started using grocery store style plastic bags. Smiley tongue Even the Macy's store at Stanford Shopping Center (near Stanford University) has gone to sh!t. You walk in, there are stands/dipslays crowded everywhere, and no one helps you. I remember when I went looking for a corset to wear under my MoH dress for Analy's wedding I went in there, picked one out, and tried it on. Unfortunately the lingerie staff were too busy standing around the cashier talking about who takes what time off to help me lace up so FH helped me. Then they had the nerve to tell him he's not allowed to help me but none of them would help me either. God, EABOD you useless Macy's staff. I walked out and went to Bloomie's next door instead and bought my undergarments there. I haven't shopped at Macy's since then and that was last year October.

    Oh that's horrible! What idiots!

I just registered at Macys.com, never went into the store. Anyone else create an online Macys registry, and if so, what was your experience? We have til June & haven't told anyone about our registry info yet. Any better store suggestions??

@Patricia: Idk if there's anything better than Macy's without going into Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom territory. I would just not recommend doing a registry with them because their customer service blows chunks. It's a bigger headache than it's actually worth it.

I used the Dillard's registry with my first marriage, and it was perfect! No problems with returning anything, no damages with any shippied items. It was all perfect.

When we first did the registry in Feb., we did it in the store and the registry rep there was uber nice, gave me a free tote bag etc. I liked the fact we could get 10% off whatever's left on the registry after the wedding (there was nothing left because most of what we wanted Macys did NOT have), and anything that was shipped to us we could return in the store. But that backfired big time when I took a shipped gift and they credited the sender's account! I'm sure you can find another dept store for dinnerware and such. Most of what we registered for was with Pampered Chef and Target. Most of our gifts came from Target, and I got hundreds of dollars of gift cards which was great. Only one person gave me a Macys gift card, thank God because I never shop there, their clothes such and housewares selection sucks too!
