Best/worst: Cake

Michelle, on February 12, 2021 at 3:18 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 23

Was there a certain flavor you loved as a guest or a layout? What did you hate as a guest where the cake is concerned?

My opinion... all cake is good cake, unless it’s dry!

Hmmm I don’t recall other cakes to be honest other than one where the flavor was coffee! That was interesting to me because it’s a flavor I’ve not seen before for wedding cakes

I'm with Ava on this! All cake is good. Except, I have to be honest, don't see the point in this naked cake trend. The whole point if cake is icing! 🤣🤣 Guess I'm not much help lol

I have been to 2 weddings where they did seasonal cakes and I hated both of them. Both were in the fall and I believe some sort of apple spice cake. I'm not a fruity cake person when it comes to certain things, and a lot of the other guests at both weddings were the same way. I think the safe thing to do is go with a flavor almost everyone enjoys and keep it simple. Add some fruit or a filling to the middle if you want something out of the ordinary so guests can easily pick it away. My favorite have honestly been marble cakes! We are thinking of doing red velvet for our wedding.

I went to a summer wedding years ago where the entire cake was banana because that is what groom's controlling mother chose or she said there would be none. No one touched it and they couldn't give it away afterward.

That sounds TRULY awful! I personally hate banana, so I can understand why nobody wanted to eat it! I don't like fruit flavored cakes, but I don't mind fruit filling...so I never really understood why people don't just do like a vanilla cake with a fruit filling or something similar!

We are doing carrot cake for our winter wedding! Its both my and my FHs favorite flavor and we have both chosen it for our birthday cake over and over thoroughout our lives. I think we will probably add a secondary option for dessert though, bc we have some picky friends and family that think carrot cake is gross haha

I hate too dry, too sweet, carrot cake, cake with vibrant colors, or with dried coconut flakes 🙊

I'm the kind of person who only likes chocolate. And I *hate* fruit flavored cakes.

So, if your cake is lemon or just plain vanilla or something, I am sad, and have no cake.

But if your cake is a variety of chocolate - or at least has chocolate icing, then I am happy!

Now, DH likes other cakes, so to compromise, we had a marbled cake with dark chocolate filling.

Fondant is pretty gross, so I avoid that as much as possible. I also rarely like bakery icings. I tend to like all flavors of cake and filling that isn’t icing, but wedding cakes are often dry which isn’t good. I’m used to homemade cake, so bakery cake in general isn’t great to me. (This is part of why we aren’t having a cake at all!)
My favorite cakes are ones without fondant, have icing that tastes homemade, aren’t dry, and having special feelings. I really love mousse fillings and fruit fillings.

At the end of the day, you can’t please everyone. You just have to get what you love and you think the majority of guests will also love!

All cake is good cake! Ok, I hate coconut, that banana cake sounds gross. As a guest I’d probably go for a seasonal flavor (lemon for summer, carrot for fall) but otherwise if very rich or unusual (peanut butter snicker doodle), I’d go for whatever simple option there is (vanilla or butter cake).

I hate overly sweet icing and also those jelly type fillings. I prefer to just have buttercream as the filling and the flavor to be the cake itself. .

And, of course, moist cake is always most enjoyable.

Dislike: Raspberry anything since I'm allergic Smiley xd

Like: Everything else as long as it isn't overly fondant or iced. I'm a sucker for cake. Simplicity is best IMO, classic flavors are always wonderful.

I hate fondant and fruit fillings! Custard or mousse fillings are my favorite (especially cookies/creme mousse).
