Best way to take money for honeymoon

Megan , on December 1, 2017 at 7:00 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 13

We are going to Jamaica in Feb. We are going to want to do some extra things that will have to pay for. What did you find the best way to pay for things. Did you take cash, credit card, or a pre paid card. I'm nervous about carrying that much cash but don't want to chance losing my credit card either.

The prepaid card is a good idea! My suggestion is to do 2 things. Definitely have cash for tips and some of the adventures and bring the prepaid card or credit card for other adventures and anything else you need. I'm always iffy about carrying so much cash also, but some places might not take cards...

Just as @Kristin asked, if your credit card waives foreign exchange fees, I would bring some cash and a credit card. Not everywhere takes card, but also if you lose your card or it gets stolen, you can easily contact your credit card company to cancel it n dispute any unfamiliar charges

Pre-paid cards don't always work outside of the US. For our Puerto Rico trip this year we booked everything on credit cards and carried cash on the resort to tip people. The food and drinks were inclusive.

I agree on credit card if there are no foreign exchange fees. I would even consider a travel rewards one for the trip, like the Capital One Venture so you can get money back on it.

As noted, take some cash for tips, small local purchases, etc., and a major credit card. Let your CC company know where you'll be, so they don't assume your card was stolen when you start making a bunch of purchases in a foreign country. Also, research the CC's policy re: foreign exchange fees, especially if you have more than one card you could take -- use the one with the most favorable policy. Finally, make copies of the front and back of your card (and other documents like licenses, passport, etc.). You should carry one set with you -- and protect it like you will your passport, etc. (e.g., keeping it in a hotel safe). And, leave another set of copies with a trusted loved one in the US (a parent or whomever). That way, if your original card (or any other documents) is lost or stolen, you can immediately start contacting the providers to request that original accounts be locked and replacement cards are issued and overnighted to you (the copies will provide you with both account numbers and contact info). If necessary, you could also contact the person in the US you've left copies with and have them take care of all the notifications (e.g., in the unlikely event you were in an accident or something else where it would be a burden to make all the calls yourselves). Good luck! (Google tips for "safe foreign travel strategies." We went to Jamaica several years ago, when there was nearly a civil war going on on the eastern side of the island. Before we left, we read up on the US State Dept website, checked with our health insurance regarding coverage in a foreign country, etc. All was fine, but better to be prepared than not.)

I was cruising when I went to Jamaica, so I had cash. If I were to do it again I'd have some cash and a credit card. You have certain protections with a cc that don't exist with debit or prepaid.

Great advice MOB. I have trouble with my prepaid card even here....

For cash? Joan Rivers used to carry her cash in a Milk Duds box to hide it, lol....quite brilliant, I think!

I use credit cards (often needs to be a Chip card [and get a PIN]) occasionally for travel, but mostly I get cash via ATM and spend that for all the small stuff to avoid any hassle

ETA When I do carry cash I divide it up and keep in different locations (example, if I got $100 I wouldn't put the whole wad in my wallet. I'd leave 25 in my wallet, 25 in a separate zipper pouch in my purse, 25 in a zipped pocket, 25 in my suitcase) so unless you lose evveerything at once, you'll still have back up cash squirreled away

You could look into travels checks, but I recommend cash.

Coming from someone who works for a credit card processor, take cash. Stash it like @Celia suggested so its not all on you at once. Avoid exchange fees. Avoid atm fees. Last year when I went to Jamaica the atm at our resort charged a $6 fee for cash withdrawal. This was in addition to the fee your bank charges. I am big on not paying to get my money. So i will not even use an ATM for a fee.

When we went to Jamaica, we took cash for tips. Then used the credit card for excursions and souvenirs.

On our recent travels we guess how much $$ we'll spend and get that much cash, but have a credit card just in case we didn't plan it out right. We did go to one restaurant that was credit card only - not only that but CHIP credit card only. Luckily we had exact cash so they accepted it (since we had already eaten). Agreed that we didn't carry all the cash at once, or in the same place.

I go to Jamaica several times a year. Definitely take cash small bills. They take USD with no problem. In the major cities, they have ATMs that will give you currency in USD so you didn't have to worry about spending all of the Jamaican dollars before you leave or exchanging it back to USD. Forget about traveler's cheques, as 99.99% of places won't accept them. Take your cash and ATM card and you'll have no problem, mon.
