Best tattoo cover-ups

Ruth & Eric, on June 1, 2011 at 2:43 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

My wedding is only 17 days away and I'm a nervous wreck with all the DIY projects I want to achieve. Thank goodness for this website...now here's another dilemna I have

I have a tattoo on my leg that needs to be covered the day of the wedding. It's a medium sized rose with black letterings.

What is the best tattoo cover-up around? Has anyone tried them?

There are a lot of products being sold for tattoo cover. CoverFX, DermaBlend, ColorTration and Kat Von D even makes tattoo cover. While these will cover the tattoo, stability is going to be an issue. If you need the cover up to last and not rub off or smear, your best bet is to go with an alcohol based makeup, preferably airbrush. Then seal over with Green Marble (alcohol based) SeLr.

Any of the typicall tattoo cover up products are usually a cream consistency and the heat from your skin will cause the cream to begin to soften and melt. Even with a sealer over top you won't be able to keep it from rubbing or smearing off.

Since you don't have a lot of time to product test or shop around, in my opinion, ColorTration and CoverFX are probably the best choices for the tattoo cover.

    Best wishes!

I agree 100% with everything Stephanie said - and have to add that I've had experience with the Kat Von D cover and found it to be completely useless. Alcohol based is number one (I'm a fan of the Temptu Dura line), and CoverFX would be number 2 for me.

    Good luck! Smiley smile

One thing to remember is to shave the area to remove any little hairs that may lift the makeup from the skin. Use rubbing alcohol to remove any traces of oil or lotion prior to the application. And keep in mind, any consumption of alcohol in the days prior will have a negative affect on the staying power of the makeup product you use. When you do apply the products, start with light layers allowing time in between for drying. I also prefer the Temptu Dura for brides when covering tattoos. The Temptu Dura, designed for airbrush may also be applied with a brush, fingers or a sponge. But if you can't get that, try the CoverFX. Happy Wedding Day!!

Ok I just googled the Temptu Dura and the coverfx. There are so many options though and neither says great for tattoo cover up so do I just pick a cover up close to my skin tone? Does it matter which kind?

    Kathleen,

From the Temptu brand, you'll need select from the DURA Skin collection. Pick a color that best matches the area you are trying to cover. Keep in mind that normally the skin on the body will be a darker shade than your face. Legs, arms, etc. are more exposed to the sun and hence are darker.

Here's the link for the dura skin collection

    Good luck!

I think I'm gonna get the temptu dura. But i'm also mind boggled by what color to go with. Debtaing if Pure Beige, Sand or Ivory.

Ideally you should select several shades and used different colors so as to keep it as realistic as possible. You don't want it to look like plastic when you are finished. If you look closely at your skin, you will see it is not one solid color.

Select from this line at CoverFX - If you are near a Sephora, you can get it there and check out the color match. Total Coverage Cream Foundation -

The Dura line from Temptu is available on the Pro site. I am not sure whether they will restrict you from purchasing it or not. You can buy a starter set that contains all of the foundation colors in smaller bottles. They also sell the Dura Skin in palettes which is what I use first on the tattoo before I airbrush. However, the palette requires 99% alcohol to activate it. The Dura products are amazing as they will not smear, rub off or anything, and you will need 99% alcohol to remove it easily

Here is a photo of a tattoo cover using Temptu. I began with the Dura Skin Palette and carefully concealed over the tattoo using a small brush. I then applied the Dura Skin Liquid Foundation using the airbrush over the entire area using several shades to match the skin tone followed up with a very light dusting of translucent powder. And finally finished it off with Green Marble SeLr to lock it on and waterproof it.

I saw a review of the new Sally hansen Airbrush Legs by an NECN reporter (you may be able to access it on their site at www.necn.com) and she showed her friend using it to cover up a tattoo on her leg and it really worked. The only draw back was she said it did rub off some on clothes....so i would be extra careful if its in an area that will be touched by your dress. Stephanie seems to havea good process going there.....looks fabulous!
