Best Face Primer for Oily Skin!

Christy, on November 21, 2017 at 9:16 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

With Black Friday coming, I want to try and knock as many accessories and detail items I can get for a good price! My makeup is one of those since I'll be doing my own makeup!

Recommendations on face primers for oily skin? I was looking to purchase Cane and Austin but its fairly steep in price. I'm willing to pay, as long as it works!

I'm looking for the same thing (even for daily use), hoping to see some recommendations on this thread!

I'm extremely red so I use NYX color correcting primer and then top it with It's Cosmetics Bye Bye Redness. I have very oily skin and haven't had issues with either one of them. NYX is inexpensive but the It's Cosmetics is a bit steep. Both I highly recommend for oily skin especially if you tend you get a little red.

I'm not a big makeup person (have used cheap maybelline everything for the last decade), but I also struggle with super oily skin--to the point of having a shiny nose within 10 minutes of a shower if I don't put any makeup on to help. I went about three weeks ago to an Ulta and had one of their staff members help me out and set me up with a whole new face lol. She recommended (and i now LOVE) a Nars primer, pore and shine control. I put it on after moisturizer, and use with a bare minerals foundation powder she also recommended for oily skin and it's made a HUGE difference. Using it daily and applying before work around 8am, still no shine when I'm going home from work. She also recommended an urban decay oil control makeup setting spray and clinique stay-matte universal blotting powder (this can be used in the morning and throughout the day, it is white but blends in clear with your makeup and nips out mid-day oily nose). I also got a Mario Badescu regimen starter kit for combination/oily skin. It wasn't a cheap trip, but for how matte and fresh my face has been looking since then, I'll keep getting the products. Again, I am a makeup novice, but these products have made a huge difference for me. I know the struggle. good luck!!

Cane and Austin is pretty good, Becca Ever Matte is great if you skin is very oily, but only use it on the oily areas as it will dry the others out.

The number one best tip I ever heard and have implemented in my routine for oil control and foundation longevity is to apply your primer then apply a translucent powder to your face before your foundation. This extra step allows the powder to absorb oil from under the foundation and helps your foundation stick better to those oily spots.

I use Becca Ever Matte on just my T-zone, Hourglass Mineral Veil on the rest of my face, Too Faced Peach Matte powder, and then either Estee Lauder Double Wear or Makeup Forever Mat Velvet plus, another light dusting of the peach powder and then Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. I live in Florida and even in summer when it is super humid and my skin is very oily my makeup lasts all day.

Mac prep and prime worked well for me. Estee lauder mattifier did not work very well. I got a tube for spending a certain amount and it is a dud. I also have benefit porefessional and it is ok.

I'm cheap sometimes and discovered that monistat anti chafing gel has the same ingredients as smashbox photo finish primer. Except it's $8 for a large tube versus $36. Seriously, try it.

ETA : @bobbileighba I'm going to try some of your tips. I have super oily skin.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer is amazing, and for a more affordable alternative, I love L'Oréal's Magic Perfecting Base.

Make sure that your skin is properly prepped and your moisturizer has time to sink in. Before applying primer, blot your skin with a tissue/YP to remove any oil slicks. Apply a dime sized amount of primer all over face, really patting it in around your t-zone, chin, and cheeks. Let primer sit on skin for at least 6-7 minutes before applying foundation. For wedding makeup, make sure you use a medium to full coverage foundation that tailors to normal to oily skin, personally, I love YSL's All Hours Foundation, Revlon's ColorStay, Maybelline's Syper Stay Full Coverage, and Estee Lauder's Double Wear.

To really help control shine, finish foundation and concealer with a setting powder applied with a damp beauty blender (pressed into skin--not rubbed). I love Laura Mercer's loose setting powder, Ben Nye's, and Maybelline's Mat and Poreless pressed powder, or their Fit Me loose powder.

Also, treating the oil slicks now, will help ensure your skin is at it's best for your big day. If your skin can tolerate it, I suggest beginning a skin care routine that incorporates Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy acids.

Here are two YouTube MUA's that also have oily skin so you can see the tutorials and products they swear by: Nikkia Joy and Casey Holmes Smiley smile

I second the Monistat anti chaffing gel it's my favorite. I like it more than any other expensive primer I've tried
