Best and worst favors and why?

Mimimushrooms, on August 8, 2022 at 4:32 PM Posted in Planning 2 19
What were the best wedding favors you ever received and why? And which one was the worst?

I had a lively discussion about this with my mother and it got me curious. My personal top three are:
1) custom printed glass cup with a cool design. The couple’s name and wedding date were well integrated into the design. I used this cup to showcase fun coffee drinks on my social media later because the names on it were not visible.
2) genuine Swiss chocolate squares in a little bag! The hazelnut flavor was divine. Perhaps this wouldn’t go as far with non sweets enthusiasts but I love good chocolate so this was a hit with me.
3) metal sporks! Not for everyone but the quirkiness suited the couple and I got a ton of use out of mine. They even gave me an extra one after I lamented my original one got stolen at work.
Worst: Hershey kisses (bad chocolate) and badly sealed bubble bottles that spilled and leaked Smiley sad
My mother said her personal favorite was a mini bottle of Grand Marnier and her personal worst was Hershey kisses.
What are yours?

My favorite: chocolate dipped fortune cookies. They were dipped in their wedding colors + edible pearls + custom wording inside!!

All the others had such a abysmal impact on me that I don't even remember. I have dozens of koozies that I've never touched, but that's about it. I do love engraved shot glasses, personally, I just have never gotten one!

Back when I was working for a wedding planner, the bride's father was known for making a really great cherry wine from a super secret family recipe. He made enough so that every guest got a bottle (they also doubled as escort cards) and the label said something about how they're all family now. They were really heavy and took a while to bring in and set up, but they were SO cute and super personal!

I'd say the worst were these shot glasses that the bride wanted to be filled by layering pink sugar spheres, white personalized M&Ms, and another layer of the pink spheres. The whole thing was then wrapped in a circular piece of tulle (which were too small to do easily) and tied with a pink ribbon (also way too small, and it didn't stay tied). Most of them either spilled or broke, and a lot got left behind. They were a pain to put together and a pain to transport.

I am never, ever going to be interested in something intended to keep as "decor" or something that is personalized to the couple. I don't like clutter and I am very careful about what non-essential items come in my home.

So, if it's not edible/consumable or useful (to be honest, I have never seen a favor that was actually useful), then I am not taking it. Sure, I like a little package of cookies or candy or local treat, but I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't offered. I'm team Don't Bother with Favors. Smiley smile

Favorite favors: anything edible. My personal favorite that I've received was a "his and hers" macaron duo. I also love receiving something edible that's local to the city of the wedding.

All of the non-edible favors I've received at weddings go right in the trash as soon as I get home. Same reason as PP: no interest in cluttering up my home with trinkets commemorating someone else's wedding. This includes koozies, glasses, coasters, keychains, etc.

In our experiences as guests, the best favors are no favors. We have never attended a wedding, even among different social circles, where anyone took home favors and in most cases the couple’s parents couldn’t give them away. The ones we have seen that were left behind: chocolate (this is basic M&Ms, Kisses, etc), birdseed or bubbles for the tosses (not sure why these were considered favors), plants, alcohol.

My favorite were the caramels from the local confectionery that my cousin had at her wedding. I’ve left every other favor behind because I’m not a fan of useless items (this includes generic “wedding” soaps, koozies, a key bottle opener, etc that I’ve seen at weddings).

Gosh, I think it’s all cute and always interesting what the couple chooses. Nothing strikes me as either can’t live without or horrible. For my daughters wedding this past May, they set up a take home snack section with some of their favorite snacks. Individual packs of Trail mix, beef jerky, mini moon pies, tangerines, and some decorated gluten free cookies with some Ball aluminum cups to pack it in. Let me tell you - almost everything was taken. Daughter took a couple tangerines with them for breakfast, I gave one box of mini moon pies to the best man, and I brought home a short stack of the Ball cups. We had also gotten some wooden fans and pashminas from another bride off Facebook Marketplace for cheap in case it was too hot or too cold - about 1/4 of the fans were taken and 1/2 the pashminas. Hands down - food was the winner Smiley winking

My favorite were chocolate truffles. The worst was a rubber clown head with the couples names on it. You squeezed the head and the eyes popped out. I had nightmares for a week.

I like matches and edible favors that aren't Hershey's or M&Ms. I use matches at home, and it's always a nice reminder to see the couple's design on the box.

Favorites: One couple had a little live succulent in a cute decorative pot at each place setting. They served as both favors and decor, and it was absolutely adorable! It was three years ago, and I still have and love the succulent. My other favorite was a “doggy bag” table full of dog treats that you could take home to your pups.

Least favorite: Hershey’s kisses and personalized M&Ms (why are these a thing? Lol). I guess I just don’t see the point in spending all this time and money packaging up a cheap piece of candy 🤷🏼‍♀️

My husband and I did something similar to number one! We are huge craft beer people, so we did custom pint glasses (seen here in pics). The symbol is a hops in the shape of a heart 😄. My day-of coordinator made sure everyone leaving took theirs, so there wasn’t a lot of waste. We got compliments on them and kept quite a few for close family members and ourselves!

As for the coolest we received, my cousin did custom coffee mugs with artwork of her and her husband in their wedding attire standing next to the Houston Astros mascot Orbit (he came to their reception!!!). It also had their initials and wedding date. We still use them for coffee/tea!Best and worst favors and why? 1Best and worst favors and why? 2

Best: personalized wine bottle openers. Anything food because i dont have to keep it around.

Worst: koozies, ornaments with bride and grooms name, pens, there are lots of bad ones.

The cheap chocolate, tosses, and plants I understand. Alcohol getting left behind, I find very interesting!

In my family and social circles, alcohol is a guaranteed win and I wouldn’t call any of us regular drinkers. I remember the wedding with the mini Grand Marnier bottle favors had the coordinator counting out bottles carefully because people were swiping unattended bottles from other tables. Towards the end of the night, the couple mentioned they had another almost full crate of small bottles and guests were welcome to one extra if they wished. The crate was emptied out in less than 10 minutes.
Do you recall what types of alcohol were usually given out? I could imagine someone’s moonshine, homebrew, or homemade limoncello getting left behind because quality control could be questionable. Or perhaps my family are just booze hounds in denial after all!

    Best: matchbooks, something edible, nothing

Worst: single glasses, shot glasses, anything i have to take home really. I don't have a need for single glasses, especially with someone elses personal info it. They go right in the donate bin or don't get taken at all.

They were honestly the best! Unlike a plastic spork, they worked for most foods except very leafy salads. The husband took the spork quality very seriously but it was worth it. I’m not surprised mine was stolen and I keep my replacement well hidden.
