Being a plus sized bride sometimes just plain sucks

TooManyMistys, on August 24, 2013 at 9:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

So today my MOH and I went looking at more dresses. I found a three more stores that claimed to have my size and several samples. Even though I said what my size was in street clothes they claimed they had what I needed. Well, shop 1. only two dresses I could put on and one was just an okay the other was a oh heck no.

So we left there. Next shop they had a few nice dresses but once again they size small so the size they said they had was too small Smiley sad shop 3 lady was really sweet only ONE dress fit and well not too well. Then she started to just put dresses up to me to just "give me an idea". I was like I am sorry but I will not purchase a dress with out getting to at least try it on first.

So we just went back to davids. My MOH got to try on some more dresses which was totally fun. We looked at more dresses they had and set up an appointment to look at a few more to decide if the one I found is the one. Either way today totally made me feel like poo...

We have previously been to AA and DB and we did like a dress as DB but will say the dresses at these other shops they knock most of the dresses I have seen at DB out of the water. They are beautiful dresses. I just got sad that I wanted to try those dresses on too.

You'll find something. I got my dress at David's Bridal too. I had plenty to try on, and felt fantastic. There was another plus size bride there too, who definitely was happy trying on gowns as well.

People can knock them all they like, but the experience I had made me feel lovely.

Oh Misty, I'm sorry you're having trouble finding a dress. I too am a plus sized bride. I am SO glad that we have a wonderful bridal shop near me that caters to plus sized brides. They had so many dresses I could try on, and all the sample sizes were plus sizes, which was amazing. I wish you were closer to Michigan so you could go to that store. I had such a great experience. I was nervous about not being able to find any dresses in a size I could try on (and I definitely wasn't about to put on a dress that was a size 10). Don't give up hope, and don't settle for a dress that you don't feel is "the one". You will find it. Keep looking! I hope your next appointments go better!

Misty, Im very sorry that you aren't able to enjoy this. Im a plus size bride who is also 5'11", I feel your pain. Dress shopping is the one thing I dread more than anything for the wedding. I go shopping for the first time Saturday... and I've had nightmares about it. You will find something amazing, just don't settle and let people tell you this is what you have to wear because of your size. Just think, youre going through all the poo now but it will just make you glow even more when you find the "one".

    @Heather I live in Texas.

@Alysa Thanks, there were some plus size just not my size. I am on the top of the plus size brides and if a dress runs 2 -3 sizes smaller than some don't carry my size at all Smiley sad I am a 24/26 in street clothes. So if I were an 18 or so I would be fine in most stores. But not at a 26 Smiley sad

@Brittany our first time really wasn't too bad. When we went to Davids I did try on a several dresses that were nice. Three we really like and one I think might be the one. I kind of hate though what I wish I could wear is something that just honestly don't look right on my body but that has nothing to do with any store lol It also sucks that the stores that do have plus size and they are just down right gorgeous dresses are well over 1k. While I could probably work a dress over that it just seems so much to pay.... So I'm conflicted on going to those places.

I would say my budget holds me back more than my size. I wish there was a store though that was all plus size.

I bought mine at David's Bridal. Once I found the correct style I was off to a better shopping experience. What I thought would look good did not. In fact I picked one of the most popular plus size dresses they have on stock.

Everyone is considered plus size when it comes to wedding dresses. I was super depressed when I tried mine on and it was 3+ the size of my normal clothes. Hang in there. You'll find something!

I am tall and wore a 26/28 when I started shopping. I had no issues at Alfred Angelo and got a great dress.

@Glenda we went to Afred but I didn't find anything I liked there.

@ Mrs. Reid I don't want to purchase anything I haven't tried on first.

I mean DB is fine, don't get me wrong and AA but the dresses as these other shops are IMO so much prettier than anything I have seen at DB or in my size a AA so far. So it just bites that they don't have my size Smiley sad I don't want to order a dress on hopes it will just look good because the ones I have tried on so far many we thought would and did not.

@Kimberly I expected the dresses to be 2-3 sizes too small that's what makes it more sucky because I can handle wearing a dress that shows it's 3 sizes bigger than I wear but sadly 3 sizes bigger than I wear most places don't accommodate.

Here's a link for all plus sized brides. It looks like they are specifically plus sized gowns. What's nice about this site is that the models are actually plus sized, so you don't have to figure out how the size 4 is going to look on you.

There is a company called Bonnie Bridal that designs especially for plus size brides. Their web site is www.bonny.com. You can see pictures of their dresses and see if there is a shop in your area.

@Donna I love bonny as well as mori lee sadly they didn't carry my size IN store at the stores we went to for me to try on to see how it looks. I have a problem with my lower stomach so it's important that I actually try on the dresses to know A. what size to get and B. to know how it actually looks. I know I will find something but it just makes me sad that the dresses I would like to try on I can't due to size. I really don't want to purchase a gown that I haven't tried on before.
