Before or after sunset?

Botty, on September 15, 2015 at 10:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 7

Because Jewish law defines a day as ending after sunset, in order to define what day our wedding is on we must have our ceremony either before or after sunset, not during. We are planning for the ceremony to be outside on the roof of the venue which has a partial view of Tel Aviv. The venue also has lights strung up across the top of the roof which are very pretty when lit up. So I'd love to hear pros and cons and practical tips for which is better? The reason I'm asking so early is because we might have to order invitations soon so that my mom can bring them back to the U.S. with her when she visits in a couple of months so we may have to decide what time everything happens pretty soon.

Have the ceremony before sunset, and you can party into the next day.

I think I would prefer to do the ceremony before sunset and the reception after. While you have the beautiful lights strung up on the roof, I would worry about needing to add additional lighting for the ceremony so that everyone can see you guys!

But it sounds like it is totally your preference!

This is confusing to me. I'm assuming all of your guests are Jewish and would know about this?

So if you get married after sunset, would you put 7/8/16 at 8pm or whatever (if sunset is before 8pm)?? Or would it be 7/7/16 at 8pm?

@Elizabeth nope we will have a good amount of non-Jewish guests too, both from Israel and abroad.

In terms of the date, the Jewish calendar is lunar and totally different from the "regular calendar" with different months and everything, so the concern is the Jewish date only. The secular date will be 7/7 no matter whether it is before or after sunset but the Hebrew date will either say the "30th of the month of Sivan" or the "1st of the month of Tamuz" if I remember correctly, I have to double check my Hebrew calendar. The date will be written on our marriage contract in Hebrew only so we have to decide before that is written too.

I think that you guys are right that before sunset may be the nicest, luckily it's summer so sunset is late enough that we can do that easily.

I'd do it before sunset, as some of the previous posters said to have the ceremony before and reception after. I'd be worried everyone wouldn't be able to see you guys after sunset.
