Before and After: Redoing my mom's 80's dress

AthenaKay, on July 16, 2015 at 10:19 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 74

I thought it would be helpful to make an official thread of a before and after of my dress in case it helps any future brides who might consider redoing an old dress. I know when I started the process I tried scouring the internet for good before and afters, and it was really difficult finding any. So hopefully this helps.

I had a family friend who is excellent in sewing agree to help redo the dress. She was my mom's friend from high school and was so excited with the idea and she really did a wonderful job. So, advice on that part would be to find a seamstress that you trust.

    And the after:

Also, the lace on the back of the dress is from the sleeves near the hands in the original dress. We literally used all parts of this dress!

I hope these can help a bride someday! It really was an amazing experience and I'm glad I was able to add a very personal touch to my wedding Smiley smile

I still can't get over how amazing this came out. The lace on the back is just... wow. I'm so impressed! You look gorgeous!

PS - I cannot believe your mom was 7-8 months pregnant with you in that photo. You can't tell at all! But that makes it so much more special that you got to wear the dress!

I love the finished product, and how its not such a huge drastic difference from the original.

Thank you ladies! It was mainly taking stuff off of the dress Smiley smile and the bouquet my mom is holding definitely hides her pregnancy bump!

Can I just say that I can actually cry over reading this post. First, I want to say I think it's awesome you used your moms dress and made it your own. Two, my mom just passed away last month Smiley sad so I will be wearing her dress for my wedding. She also got married in the 80s, and I love ya mom, but 80s haha. I'm pretty sure she had the SAME sleeves as your mom did the lace up to the neck. Also, I think what you did is gorgeous ! And you look amazing in it! If you don't mind I have a few questions.. I tried my moms on a few days ago, it's a tad small, lol but I've put on some serious weight with all the stress of everything. So I was thinking of possibly doing a corset back, as I learned is possible, thanks to another poster on here. My major concern was how discolorered hers is since its been in the attic so long, so how did you get here back to being so white?! I'm also thinking of doing capped sleeves, and I really like the way yours turned out. I just really can't thank you enough for posting this. Sorry if I'm all over the place lol emotions are still crazy.
