Beer license/permit help!

Ladylight, on April 15, 2016 at 8:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

So my venue asked if I was serving alcohol at my wedding. I said yes, we were going to have beer. She said I would need a abc permit/license-but if I was just serving beer that it may not be required. Venue is ok with alcohol.

My caterer doesn't have an alcohol license.

My venue is in NC. From what I'm reading online it seems like the permit is required for fortified wine and spirituous liquor. Do I need it for just beer?

Anybody have experience with this issue?

Where is your venue?Mine is outside of Asheville. A license is not required for beer and wine, but adding liquor require you to get one. Our planner said it's pretty easy and costs about $75.

I don't know in NC, but you should be able to find a phone number for the licensing board online. I've run into a few unusual circumstances for events in the past and I just call and ask. They usually appreciate it as so may people try to get away with not following the laws properly.

It's in Roxboro. That's the only info I can find online. Seems like it's only really needed for strong alcohol. I guess I'll try calling tomorrow to find out for sure!

Here in South Carolina the rule is that we don't have to have a permit if money is not changing hands. If you sell tickets or have a cash bar you have to have a permit. To get the permit, you first have to have 2 people get state law enforcement background checks done within 60 days of the event then fill out the application and both take it to the county sheriff more than 15 days before the event in the location of the event. They take their sweet time and sign it then you take it to the department of revenue and pay a fee and get the permit.

Avoid this by not having a cash bar and not selling tickets. At least in SC.

Eta: I do this for every roller derby bout we have here.

You do not have to have a permit in North Carolina if serving only beer and wine. You must have a permit if serving spirits, or liquor. You cannot legally hold a cash bar at a wedding in the state of North Carolina. I hope that helps everyone.
