Beer Help

Mrs. Knolle, on July 8, 2016 at 9:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I'm planning on buying three different types of beer for my wedding. I do not drink beer so therefore have no idea what to get. My FH drinks whatever is handed to him and doesn't really have an opinion. I was thinking about getting a light beer, a medium beer, and a dark beer. What has everyone else offered?

    Light med, dark is perfect.

I would go with something like an IPA, a lager and something richer like a Porter or an ale or specific micro brew.

I think your plan is good. I offered an IPA (light, bitter beer...my personal favorite), a red ale, and a dark stout that went well with the chocolate cake.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what brands of beer match up to those types of beer you mentioned. I know absolutely nothing about beer.

Where do you live? In my area there are a LOT of little breweries, so I just got kegs from a place I trusted.

If you have a Beverages & More nearby, I've gotten REALLY good advice from them as far as what to pair with what styles of food, what will appeal to a variety of people, etc. (I can't drink wine without getting migraines, so anytime I'm hosting a party I turn to them for wine advice).

ETA: the only reason I'm reluctant to name specific beers is that it's just going to be my own personal taste, not necessarily what works best for a big group. BUT when I host my friends I generally get Lagunitas IPA, Guinness Stout, and whatever red or brown ale is recommended since I don't generally drink those. Smiley smile

You're having a summertime wedding - I would recommend an IPA, which is a hoppy/bitter style of beer (Dogfish Head is one that my FH really enjoys), Corona or something similar (a light beer), and then maybe Yuengling or Heineken for the third option. I would stay away from porters/stouts, even though I always enjoy those! They're not really summer beer IMO.

Find a liquor store you or a friend trusts and ask the store for advice. They're pros!

We chose local beer. It does happen to be more expensive so if it works for your budget, go to a popular brewery in your area and ask what they'd suggest -- otherwise pick an assortment of macro-breweries (Budweiser, Miller, Heneiken etc.) and call it day.

We did a light and fruity beer (Founder's Rubeaus) but if you want to choose from a larger brewery anything with light in the name would work. A you can drink it all day beer (Founder's All-Day IPA), and a heavy hitter IPA (Bell's Two Hearted)

I'm in Texas. One of my choices will probably be Shiner Bock. Not sure on the other two.

@mrspettit Bell's Two Hearted is one of my FH's absolute favorites. I'm not a fan of IPAs though, too bitter for me!

Also, we are buying bottled beer. I'm not sure if that matters.

Most stores will give a discount when buying by the case. Be sure to ask.

Following. I don't really drink at all, especially not beer. We are of course serving it for everyone else and I am at a total loss. From some close family I have gotten recommendations of bud light or coors

Go to a store and ask for those beers, there are types of beers. The brand iant going to help. If you ask for lager your going to get five answers. Unless it's pa/NJ then you're going to mostly get 'yeungling'.

But go to a pro. They will know!

So Shiner Bock is a lager and definitely something I would serve at a Texas wedding. People who are serious beer drinkers tend to be into IPAs (Indian Pale Ale). Popular IPAs are Dogfish Head (they have lots of wholesalers in Texas), Bell's Two Hearted (not sure about availability in TX), Austin Beerworks Fire Eagle IPA is a local IPA you could do and Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA tends to be a favorite. Stouts are super heavy and I don't drink a ton of them--Guinness is obviously a classic stout everyone has heard of but I think if you're going for crowd pleasing beers I would skip the stout. Instead of doing light, medium, dark beer go for a mix of beers: lager, IPA and then do a wheat beer like Three Floyd's Gumball Head or Sierra Nevada Kellerweis. You could also do a basic pale lager like Corona or Heineken that pretty much anyone will drink.

We're doing a mix of 10 draft beers with a few bottles of beer to the side.

It'll be an October wedding, so a lot of (you guessed it) pumpkin beer, Octoberfest, kolsch etc. Our venue is a craft beer brewery so that's why we're having so many different beers on tap. Normally I would say 3 to 4 is fine.

This menu will probably be similar to what we'll be serving the day of.

@MrsPettit you must be in MI. Smiley smile I love Founders.... I work at World Of Beer and the Rubaeus was on nitro for a while, Sooooo delicious. Founders Dirty Bastard is another crowd pleaser ... I love scotch ales. I lived near Dark Horse Brewery in Marshall, MI, for a while, their Scotty Karate is another good scotch ale.

My favorite light beer right now is 21st Amendment Hell or High Watermelon.... it's summery and crisp with a hint of a melon aftertaste, without being supersweet. I'm really sad we don't have it on tap at work anymore, haha. Smiley winking Also good light, summer beers: Creature Comforts Bibo Pilsner, Jekyll Big Creek Pear Kolsch, the tried and true Sam Adams Summer.

I don't usually love IPAs either, but Green Flash Tangerine Soul Ipa (I think that's the name) is really unique... fresh citrus with a hoppy finish. Stone IPA is a good, solid choice, as well.

If you want a dark beer, Terrapin Liquid Bliss is really nice without being too heavy or malty. Sometimes I find stouts and porters to be too much, especially for summer, but I can drink Liquid Bliss in the summer. And obviously, since I'm partial to MI beers, Founders Porter.

Basically, you want these four: a light crisp beer (Pilsner, lager, or kolsch), an IPA, a dark beer (stout or porter), and a Belgian. That will make basically everyone happy. Smiley smile

Hope this is helpful! Eta: clarity
